Pedal Breeders' BIG Board Club Part III

What am I missing?
IMG_2878.JPG

Getting close to having the PT-Pro board up and running! Just waiting on a few midi cables now. Have a patchbay on the side to route my input and output, plus my volume loop send and return for the incoming Moog MF-104M SuperDelay! Debating on swapping out the VoodooLabs Mondo for a Strymon Zuma and Ojai, but so much monies.

Nice - as per usual. Where's the Manta gone? And the reflex?

Cheers

Ben

The Manta has been kicked off of the board by the Xero. As much as I love the Manta, the phatness of the Xero is just too good. The Reflex is off because with the ES-8 I just didn't need it. One less midi cable to worry about, a few less TRS cables, and one less pedal to power.

So I currently have the Moog MF-104 at my house, I have a Sinvertek Flight Time on the way, and I have been missing the Tonal Recall and wanted to compare it to the Moog, so I grabbed one of those last night as well. I might have an analog delay problem. Who will survive the battle royal?! The Moog is by far the best delay I've ever played, but due to its size and ridiculous price tag, I might end up going another direction for my actual rig.

I absolutely love my Tonal Recall. It's not a Moogerfooger, but it does what it does so very well. As nshuman will attest, however, the thing about Moogerfoogers is how they interact with each other. That's where they really shine. As a stand-alone the MF-104 is amazing, but it's also yuge, so if it's on its own, you can probably do just as well with something much smaller.

If you are playing a delay, the Moogs are my fav, it's just so musical and responsive and there isn't really anything that can replace it. If you just need a great sounding echo or backdrop, there are other options that are pedalboard friendly, which you are exploring.
There's a ton of automation you can add to the Moog via MIDI using your ES-8 and an expression pedal too. You could get creative with your routing as well; you could put effects into the delay line - like some H9 pitch stuff or decaying synth voices. So you can take advantage of its size for doing unique stuff with the gear you have, otherwise I love having that pedal more in a creative environment than a live one.

The thing about the Tonal Recall I remember is that I always was wishing it had just a bit more headroom. It got grainy a little too fast for my tastes, but we'll see how I feel about that when I get one in my hands again. I also wish the Tonal Recall could be tapped into longer delay times than standard to get that awesome overclocked lofi delay sound.

I definitely get this. That is why the MF-104 is so hard to get rid of. I want to just keep it around because it is such an inspiring pedal. But mostly what I love about is just the sound of the repeats. It just adds this beautiful warmth to everything. That being said, I probably wouldn't dive too deep into the special offerings it has available. This is why I'm playing with the idea of something smaller. If I could find a smaller delay that had the quality of repeats of the MF-104M I wouldn't think twice about swapping them out. Although I really need tap tempo and trails. Those two factors alone limits my analog delay choices down to a very select few. Another reason the Tonal Recall is very ideal, even if the repeats aren't 100% what I'm looking for.

Ok cool. I hear you on the fatness of the Xero. I just don't think I could trade the versatility of the manta - I guess that's why I've got both

I'm still having to deep dive with my reflex. What features that you were using are covered with the ES8?

By the way, any more videos with the future impact likely? I really dig your last two. Very inspiring.

Cheers

I just needed expression sent to all my devices on my board. Wasn't using the LFO's or anything on the Reflex. I can do all of that with a standard expression pedal and the ES-8. The ES-8 allows you to send midi expression to I think 8 different devices, plus it has 2 analog expression outputs.

The Manta is insanely versatile, and I'll miss a few of those filters for sure. But I've come to realize I don't use filters that much, and when I do, I want to bring the phatness!

Probably no more FI videos for me. I actually don't have it anymore. In the end, I didn't jive with the pedal. For as cool as it is, it just isn't my cup of tea.
