Pedal repair drama... Is this normal procedure?

I always thought it was a muff of some kind. Whatever it is rules. I don't know why there is so much obsession with pedal guts around here. You don't play with the damn guts, so who cares if its a rats nest? Seriously. What I want to know is how that diode magically started to short out. I have a Depth Charge and mine has no grounding issues. Did you lift the guts up out of the casing? I'm just confused how the diode could move up like that. I mean it sounds like it was working until very recently.
Just looked at the pics again. Doesn't appear that if you lifted the guts that it would have caused that diode to move. Just very odd. I'll have to take a look at mine again. I know these things can be weird about One Spotting to.
Do you know how to use a Multimeter? You could test that diode and see if it's the issue. If not, then I'd let the TB'er you were talking about have a look. It seems like it would be very easy to fix.

lol. i just hate ugly wiring jobs 'cause they look like stuff will FAIL. i do move my board around a decent amount, so shoddy builds skeer me.
plus, ugly wiring not always, but USUALLY denotes some one that's not as skilled. which, again, brings up scary images of a pedz falling apart mid-gig.

Jwr, it happens man. From what he said I think it prob happened in transit. Sometimes all it takes is a little drop and something could get knocked loose. I dropped my cs-2 from my bed onto the carpet, seriously less than two feet and had to get it repaired.
You don't crawl under your hood to drive your car to work, but it helps to know whats goin on under there just in case of a problem. Same concept. I hear though, but if your really into something ,at some point you wanna know exactly how it works. Be it pedals, cars, instruments, women. Some are just easier than others to figure out, some are freakin impossible

As messy as the build looks, it is SOLID inside. Nothing moves around. It's all hot glued / epoxied so as to minimize movement. You can't jiggle any of the pots or the board. Even the LED is super glued to the housing to prevent removal. As for power, that's an interesting notion. I usually use a Voodoo Labs power supply, but when this pedal stopped working, I was using an adapter I just happened to have on hand. It was not on my board. I didn't even think about the adapter having caused the problem...
A local TB'er, who builds and mods pedals, is offering to help me get the problem sorted. I'll post results.
AH! What kind of adapter was it? Do you remember? It's possible that the adapter shorted out that diode or another part. I've had that happen to me before, but it was pretty apparent on the pedal I had. The part had literally burned. Power supplies are soooooooo weird sometimes. I could totally see that being the issue. Let us know what you discover!

Speaking as someone with a lot of experience building expensive things (high-end bicycles)...part of the reason people have had me do their bike builds is that I like to think I sweat the details, even if the customer can't see these details normally. IMO, spending a few extra minutes to clean up a build (bike, pedal, bridge, whatever) shows that the builder gives a damn about his/her work and, given the prices of some boutique pedals, shouldn't be an option.
And I, for one, have a habit of opening up new-to-me pedals just to see if any of what I said above is apparent inside it. Plus, it's fun to see what may be scribbled inside the thing's lid.
And yeah...P.E. is off my list of potentials as well, after hearing all this.
I'm not going to say that every electronics install has to look like art. I've done a lot of preamp installs that needed to be "shoehorned" into the cavity, but they worked.

I seem to remember a thread were Smith said he was approched by a well known bass player (forget who) who asked him "where do I sign for an endorsment" and Smith replied on your check lol.

That guy was out of line and rude. If any builder/company talked to me that way, I would just thrown the pedal/product in the trash. (talking about depth charge dude - though, I've seen Ken Smith first hand complain/whine/b*tch about Yves Carbonne walking around with his bass at NAMM)

Normally I don't use adapters for anything other than Boss pedals, but my board was getting full and I didn't have another option at the time... Hasty me!
I'll try that tonight, and see if I can at least get the LED to come on. I might be able to meet with a tech/mod guy tonight, but otherwise won't be able to test again for sound until tomorrow night... I'll be really happy if I can get this sorted. This pedal sounds great. It will definitely be getting a new paint job though. I'm almost as excited about defacing it as I am about the possibility of getting it to work again.
