Pedals you love but wish.......

I wish Xero would be available in wah enclosure.
I wish my Dwarfcraft Shiva had a gate.
I wish there were chorus pedal that sounded like modulation in Subdecay Echobox.
I wish you could program arpeggios in Pitchfactor. And I wish I didn't have to buy footswitch to be able to switch bank down.
I wish you could set tempo on Goatkeeper with BPM.
I wish there were looper that could read thoughts and knew when engage itself :-)
 
Is there such a thread already, that I am missing? Or we probably should ask the mods to separate it?

I am referring to the relay switching in the KORG Pitchblack tuner, because it is the only pedal that I own that is true bypass and has inaudible switching noises at the same time. I don't claim there are no noises at all, but they are at levels so low that they are not heard through the amp. On the other hand the two other real true 3PDT true bypass effects that I have - you can always hear when I am engaging them (unless the drummer covers it with his break) and that has bugged the hell out of me.

I read somewhere that having all effects true bypass and no buffering at all can degrade your tone, but I never figured out exactly why.

It was explained that it is because the length? of wire the signal has to travel in the effects, but it doesn't make sense to me, cause I have got ~ 20 ft. of cable from the bass to the pedals and another ~ 20 ft. from the pedals to the amp. so how much difference do another, say 3 ft. make? OK, said 3 ft. are not shielded instrument cable, but they are in (mostly) metal boxes, which are tied to ground, so that must have some shielding effect.

Or is it about total capacitance of the wires shorting the high end to ground? That makes "some" sense, because if the wires are not decoupled the equivalent capacitance is the sum of all the different wires' capacitance. Does 40 ft. of cable make that much of a difference? In any case if it does a filter in the middle of the equivalent 40 ft. wire would mean higher cut-off frequency with a steeper slope?

If buffering is done through op-amps, which I suppose is at least 80% of the cases then I guess that the all-tube players didn't want them cheap semiconductors to "spoil" their all-tube tone and suddenly everybody wanted the true - wire to wire bypass?

At least I don't have to worry about that - the first thing my signal meets on its way out of the bass is the buffered input of the bass crybaby and my amp is solid state anyway :)

Lastly - would you please give an example of a TC effect that has the option of buffered - relay switched bypass?

I will try to respond to the questions, but note that there are lots of opinions on this topic beyond ours. Sorry if this gets too technical!

The TC pedals are the small ones with a USB port. They are called "Tone Print".

I believe it is desirable to have a buffer if you are going into a pedal or amp which does not have high input impedance (some vintage pedals, for instance). I have heard the 3PDT switches have low resistance, but some capacitance and inductance. If so, a buffer could be nice. We have not measured this. It is rumor only.

With op amps and silicon switches it is possible to match voltages and reduce popping during switching (we have studied this and implemented it into all of our pedals). I am not sure how one can do this in "true bypass" circuits. The minute one uses a capacitor then the circuit cannot be called true bypass (it is a "tone sucker"!). The challenge is to ensure that the bypass circuit and the effect circuit are at the same potential when the switch occurs. How do you do this without messing with the clean signal? Maybe tuners are different in some way? This seems like another potential reason to put the bypass choice into the hands of the player.

My Bootsy Collins Bootzilla wah pedal with fuzz. Broke, but it had an amazing tone to it. I should go get it repaired or something, it think it is just faulty soldering.

So, i guess this falls under the too cheaply made category.

Yep, I had one of those. They're really nice sounding wah pedals but I wish that they weren't rendered of such poor quality.
 
I like the looper on the M9 but wish it were much longer and had a button that allowed it to gradually fade like a delay and was a stand alone pedal.
I like the octave down and octave up on the BMS. I wish EHX would put them in a pedal by themselves for significantly less than the BMS.
I wish the effects loop on the Q-tron + could be independently engaged when the Q-tron was bypassed.
I wish the M5 had two more switches to simplify switching patches.
I wish Line 6 would put out an M series that was essentially two M5's with an effects loop in between them for less than the price of two M5's.
 
The TC Electronic Nova Repeater, which I love, has so many features it is the only pedal I wish it had something less instead of more:

I wish that when the effect is off, the kill-dry switch would not be active and act as a mute button. It is too close to the on-off switch and I have accidentally activated it when switching the delay off, muting my entire signal ... during a show!
 
I Wish the color button on my MXR M80 was foot switchable.

I Wish the Bassballs internal pots were on the outside without having to mod.

I Wish the bass big muff had a master volume for better mixing when in dry mode.

Wish Tech21 would come out with a version of their bass driver that started out flat, but offered the "mid-scoop" option as a switch. Rather than having the mid-scoop hard-wired as the starting point.

Just put a switch on there and label it "METAL!" or something. :D Maybe call it the "DOOM" switch?

I also wish that every single pedal made .... had the option of phantom-powering it via an XLR output or input. But that's for another thread.

How about "Contour"? Oh wait... I guess that's been done. ;)
 
Realizing this was covered already above...

I wish the Submarine Designer didn't 'pop' whenever I flip ANY switch on it. Seriously, the boost switch is the worst. Thought I busted my speakers one time. Luckily, I don't really need/use it. Still... POP!!! Ugh... (freak'n awesome pedal otherwise)
 
That the TC Nova Dynamics could mix both channels to one mono output. You can have one input to two outputs, or two in two out, but not two in one out. This would save having the Boss LS2 taking up room on my board.

Also that the TC Nova Drive had a third model - fuzz - on the distortion channel, perhaps with a flick of a switch to choose between the two. It's such a flexible and great sounding unit that this would make it perfect. I mean, you have a TS style drive (with clean blend) and a Rat inspired distortion and series, reverse series, parallel routing options, preset, or manual switching options. Being able to kick a fuzz in instead of distortion would be mightly epic.

For all dual band compressors to have adjustable crossover and individual level adjustment for highs and lows. Some have one or the other but rarely both. Why should I be satisfied that 'insert brand name here' have decided that the perfect crossover is 800mhz? An whilst we're at it, a choice of stereo or mix to mono outputs for the 2 bands.

Lastly the LS2. Let me mix A+B with the bypass signal so I can have 3 signals going through it.

You've given me a great (although I dare say impossible) idea there. Using the same kind of technology that allows people to take reverb impulses of different rooms and spaces to load into software based reverb units, how about a multi-fx unit that allows to you capture the 'essence' of your existing pedals.

Not sure how this would work, but something along the line of sending a pure sine wave through the device whilst sweeping each knob through their full range and back to neutral to build up a 'stamp' of each knobs function and effect.

Probably wouldn't happen as it would put Line 6, Zoom and Digitech out of business.
 
Dwarfcraft Great Destroyer

It's awesome but like, I mean on most settings you don't even need to play your guitar/bass you can just knob twiddle and make weird ass noises. So like if you play with the pedal on in those settings any time you hit a rest in the music the default pedal noise comes through, which usually sounds like a lawnmower or electronic farting.

I really want to sell it but I have a feeling I'll miss it when I am playing while super drunk because it's loads of fun then. Maybe I should sell it and get one of those mangler pedals instead since they probably do the whole electronic noise/knob twiddler weirdness better.
 
I wish I could fit three Moog pedals, a Morley PWB, a green Sovtek Muff and my amp footswitch onto a Pedaltrain-1.
