What a nice board! I have it just like you do - Chorus... nice, but I don't need it etc...
But your board is the best example that those small pedals with top mounted jacks are just the way those pedals should be. Side mounted jacks just need too much space - even when all the pedals have 'em it's just space used for nothing.

Thanks aledeville! I'm really happy with the way it came together. I didn't specifically LOOK for pedals with top jacks, it just kind of happened that the ones I wanted on there (mostly) have them. If I pick up the Octamizer, I might also look into a Polytune Mini... Maybe I'll be able to fit the Polytope back on?

Once I know for 100% sure that it's done, I want to really put the final touch on it with some Lava cables. No extra cable length in between pedals! In the meantime, I had an extra Planet Waves cable kit sitting around, which still cleaned up the board nicely. :)

Anyone have any ideas as a similar but better pedal?

Sorry I didn't reply earlier Superdave... slipped through the cracks. Are you asking about overdrives or fuzzes? I've become an overdrive connoisseur and have owned 17 overdrives, but can't help on fuzzes. Could never get that effect to work for me, and I've never needed the effect in general anyway.

Since you mentioned the B3K specifically: It may be one of the more spendy overdrives out there, but it's absolutely worth it. It pretty much nails the "overdriven amp tubes" sound... it sounds remarkably like overdriving my 1974 Ampeg V4B. The Darkglass leans a little towards the more aggressive end of the overdrive scale, but it's quite touch sensitive and can still do a nice subtle "barely there" overdrive sound too. It also adds a touch of fatness that's really nice.

I've tried that Boss overdrive a couple of times in shops, but never liked it enough to bring one home with me. I've listed the overdrives I've owned below, still have the ones that are highlighted. Happy to provide any info I can on them, shoot me a PM if you like. Always happy to talk gear!

Really digging that rhopper! Out of interest, how come you put the compressor last? I tried it with my little board but it kinda screwed with the dynamics of the pre-amp!

PS - forgot to thank you by the way 5sg. I bought some wood to 'fill in' the back area but now I'm reconsidering it... It would give me more space but where will my cables go!?

+1, That's a nice little board rhopper. :) I've never tried the Ripper, but the Bass Boost Chorus is a GREAT pedal. I bought it for the detune mode and it didn't let me down.

Sure thing Valentine. You know, if you wanted to get particularly slick, you could mount your pedals over that back space, and then leave the wood out and run your cables underneath the pedals. CLEAN = WIN. :bassist:

On compressors: For me it works best to run my comps at the end, but before my preamp/DI. Running that way lets me add compression to any effect before it, rather than just the signal from my bass. Also, I try to run as clean a signal to my envelopes and octavers, effects based on dynamics and/or signal. Envelopes can get spikey (as in volume peaks), octavers can add some pretty serious low end and a compressor can help tame both.

The key is to not run too much compression (unless the "squish effect" is what you want). I'm a pretty dynamic player as well, and I know I'm running too much compression when I feel like I'm fighting with it. I think of comps as a safety net really... I use them to add a bit of fatness to my sound (the PWNZOR in particular adds as certain... "something") and to catch only the particularly spikey peaks when I really get digging in and playing. :bassist:

I love the Ripper! It may not be for everyone, but I can find useful distortion, fuzz, filtery and synthy sounds in it for live covers.

Bass Boost Chorus would be my 1st pick if I had to have only one pedal.

Been a while since I've posted my Mini, but it's been a while since I've changed anything. I've slowly been boiling both of my boards down to what I use, not what might be just for fun. Changes are getting fewer and farther in between!

On the Mini, I just wasn't using my Polytope, so I swapped in my MXR to see if I'll use octave more, which I suspect will be the case. The Polytope is my perfect chorus, but I just don't use chorus. If the MXR gets enough play, I might pick up an Octamizer (which I've wanted for a LONG time) and the MXR will go to the secondary board so I have a killer octaver there too. Plus the Aggie has top jacks, which would look good on my Mini. :D lol

Bass > TU-3 > MXR BOD > Dark Driving or B3K (depending on mood) > Proton > PWNZOR > Tone Hammer -->

What sort of power supply do you use on this to handle the Tone Hammer? I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle the power situation on mine for building a board.

Do the Pedaltrain Mini's not have that lip across the top anymore? Or is that a mod people are doing on their own?

Just put together a PT Mini

Thinking of replacing the Micro Synth tho. I'm only using it for one song really. So contemplating just replacing it with a 'synthy' fuzz. Maybe the Mastotron? I'm thinking if I put it on there sideways, I might be able to add a Phat Phuk or the new Mark Bass mini booster. Thoughts?

I'd also like to replace the Opto Stomp with a Pwnzor. Partly because it'll also take up less room (loving the idea of top mount jacks).

I've got a Dunlop Power Brick tucked into the back well. It's got seven 9V power outs and three 18V. Works great! :)

aledeville is correct... the newer Minis don't have that back wall. Mine's an older one I picked up in a trade deal early in 2011. :)

Wow. That slot for a PSU is one of the things I really like about the mini. I'd be MUCH less enthusiastic about it without.

I've made an interesting discovery. A PT Mini fits nicely in this [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] carry-on case. It appears to have enough room for a micro head and all my cabling. I'll post pics over the next couple of days when I sort out the pack.

Will be interested to hear/see what you have to say about that case. I've been debating about a hard case for mine...
