Pedaltrain MINIs United Again!

IMG_0213_zps18aa80d5.jpg

Just got a pre owned Pedaltrain Mini today. Not got any velcro for the pedals or zip ties (getting those tomorrow) but I'm pretty happy with it! I've still got enough room for one more pedal, but I honestly doubt I'll get anything in the near future. It's just nice to have everything organised and not rattling around in a bag.

R-L:

Boss TU-3
Blackstar LT Boost
Ashdown James Lomenzo Hyperdrive
Boss CE-5

The latest iteration of my board, though it seems to be constantly changing...

Korg Pitchblack > FDeck HPF Series III > 3Leaf GR2 > Fairfield Barbershop (in the Effects loop of the GR2, but still works when GR2 is off) > 3Leaf Little Black Box > 3Leaf Enabler

I still need to settle on a compressor, but I'm running low on space...
How does the schizophrenic fit under there? I know the feet need changing for a mini, but does the board need much more modding?

They actually sound pretty good. I'm impressed with the Hotone stuff so far. Not the best, but they're really good.

Really ? The octave tracks OK ? I would love to have one if so, but the only report I heard so far on TB rated it pretty badly. -->

Got my hands on a Hotone Octa and it's disappointing. I'd hoped it could replace my MXR BOD which I like, but was hoping to go all 1590a size or under - all my other pedals are.

The main lower tone itself is nice, but subtle. It's not as well defined as the MXR, which cuts through so you get the two basses locked in unison effect. The Hotone sound is more of a blend adding depth, and there's a touch of modulation. That's not just the way I had the knobs adjusted - the octave tone wouldn't go any louder. The dirty switch to 'analogue' is a plus, and that cuts through more - but i wasn't looking for this sort of sound..

However, there was a similar issue to what I found on the Mooer Pure Octave in that the pitch of the octaved sounds is off. I'm not just talking the hint of detuning which can give a pleasant thickening of the sound. The octave up is so out that it's embarrassing.

The tracking is not wonderful on the Hotone either. I'm using Chrome Flats which in my experience pitch-track better than brighter rounds, and I go through a Xotic SL which usually gives sufficient sustain that octaver tracking doesn't wobble as extended notes die away.

I'm probably expecting too much of a £65 device comparing it with a pedal twice the price, but then some of the Mooers do bear comparison with more expensive options. This Hotone is not even close.

So I'm resigned to the fact that I'll not get an all 'micro' set up. At least the MXR BOD at 6cm wide is still fairly compact.

And my Mini arrived today...this is how it looks now but it's only temporary; I have a Brimstone XD-1 on the way which will replace the Hyperpak. I just now realized that I'm replacing the smallest pedal on both boards with what no doubt will be the largest pedal on both boards.

Interesting to see that pic, as my Mini also has an OptoStomp and the same Planet waves tuner, along with a TC Corona Chorus and a Radial Bassbone. I gotta say, the tuner is on it's way out tho...it's just way to difficult to see in sunlight....I do plenty of outdoor gigs in the summertime, and it has become a real challenge.....so I'm thinking I probably will replace it with a PolyTune 2. Any other tuners I should consider?

Just put something around it that prevents the sunlight from directly shining onto the display. I used to put some black paper around the top of the tuner. Worked very well.

I wish I could say that was a viable solution, but it just doesn't work out with that one in bright light. Even when you shade the display from the (direct) light source, if it is a bright location, it's still a bear to see. I've used cases, etc, to block the light, but there are just better options out there these days. (It does, however, work fine in your typical "dark stage" situation.)

Interesting to see that pic...

My larger board has a Korg DT10b that I like in general (if anything, it's a bit TOO accurate sometimes when trying to dead-center the LED on low E and lower tunings) but may go away later on in favor of something smaller, like one of the Polytunes (maybe a Mini, to gain max amount of space back) or a Pitchblack.

- Editing to say that I've been a fan of the Pl/Waves tuner for some time now; they're really accurate and are built like an old Buick (and weigh almost as much, for that matter). They don't seem to get a lot of love tho, and I really wonder why sometimes. I've never tried to use one in direct sunlight tho.

The P Waves tuner works pretty well for me, other than the display in bright light. One other complaint for me is that I have to tune the B string using a 12th fret harmonic...it won't lock on the open string well.

My larger board has a Boss TU3, and sometimes I think I should just go with another for the Mini, but I guess I really want to try something new and different.

I would go with the polytune, a mini, even. Faster than the Boss and much more visible in any light condition.
