Pedulla quandary

I have a Thunderbold 1995 all original

Best neck I have ever laid my hands on. The growl of the bartolinis and thunderguts are unique.

I hear people say it's gonna increase the prices, but you still can buy it for reasonable prices if you compare to the other "boutique" basses of the 90's.

I never say never, but It's the only bass (after 49 basses through out the years) that I don't want to get rid, trade, sell.

I started playing bass in 1967 or so. Over the next quarter century I owned and played lots of "major" models from lots of "major" brands of basses.

  • Fender P's, J's, Tele basses;
  • Music Man Sting Ray and Sabre;
  • G&L 1000, 2000 and ASAT;
  • Yamaha BB3000,
  • Ibanez SR1500;
  • Gibson EB's, RD's, a Grabber and a Ripper,
  • Peavey B Quad 4,
  • Ric 4001.
(Yeah, I kept a comprehensive list!)

But none of them ever said, "I'm your forever bass." So I kept searching and playing. Whenever I traveled on business I would carve out time to check the local music stores.

I finally tried a Pedulla MVP. I couldn't get the memory of that playing experience out of my head.

So I bought it (although at the time I could barely afford it). I never put it down.

It was so perfect for me that after a few months I became scared of what I would do if my new main squeeze ever was lost or became unavailable. This bothered me so much that that I scraped together enough money to buy a second MVP.

Nearly 30 years later, these two are still my "go to" gig basses. In terms of playability and tone, for me the Pedulla MVP is the perfect bass.

Good luck in your quest!

My 1982 Buzz has a single-action truss rod with a "conventional" nut as well. It has some turns on it, but it no doubt has many more turns left in it, and I've only had to adjust it maybe three or four times since I purchased this bass in 1990.
I've used the same make and model strings all that time until just last year.

I think your MVP is no doubt prettier than my Buzz. When they switched to the new logo is also when he appears to have upped his game a bit with the finishes and even some of the woodwork as well.
Sounds like you have a great and stable bass! Congrats!

When mine was refinished, a few months ago while I waited to buy it, the owner told me that the paint guy was going to make the grain more visible. The painter had said that Mike Pedulla didn't really try to enhance the flame or quilt as much as he could have, back in the day. I have to agree because the older MVPs and Buzzes I've seen, and the late 80s Pentabuzz that I once owned didn't show much enhancement of the quilting or flame. Mike's basses from decades later seem to have much better finish work. It appears he stained the flame and/or quilt before applying the transparent colors, which makes for a striking and deep look!

Dang... I may have to take back what I said! Those basses have gorgeous figuring!

Which model are you looking to get? I've had 3.
  1. Thunderbass - beautiful chocolatey bass in every way, but kind of got lost in the mix a bit
  2. Rapture - fantastic jazz bass. My main bass for a very long time. Really zingy. Only thing I didn't like was the playability high up on the neck. Very light, and great B-string.
  3. Buzz - amazing bass. 0 complaints.

$3k is a high price I think.

I am very, very seriously thinking of purchasing the bass copied here. The bass is even the same color as my favorite guitar (that I already own), so that is a nice bonus.

I have never played a Pedulla, but I have been intrigued for years. However, I am a bit hesitant because the paint is chipped.

I have also read that buyers SHOULD NOT purchase a Pedulla without a special tool that comes along with all Pedullas for adjusting the truss rod. Is there any validity to this assertion?

I'm pretty much looking for others' opinion on this bass' price. I greatly appreciate others' $0.02.

I'm not saying it's not "worth it", but 6k is an insanely high price...
