People who are banned

If you're referring to conduct here on TB, I feel like I have to address this. We don't usually like to air out a user's dirty laundry, but since you opened the door...

You've never been banned from TB.

You've received three official warnings from mod staff here.

One in June 2016 - Rule 10: Trolling - you were putting down the buyers of a specific brand bass. That warning was worth 0 points, there was no ban.

One in July 2016 - Rule 1: Respect - You called someone a "Totalitarian A$$hat" and said their advice was worth nothing. That warning was worth 0 points, there was no ban.

One in November 2016 - Rule 3: Off Limits Topics: You had a string a posts in a thread that were over the line political. Intent doesn't matter. What is on the screen when you click "post reply" is what mattered. Rather than being issued multiple warnings for each post, you were issued a 2 point warning, and those points expired November 2016.

3 warnings, 2 total points. Never enough points at one time to trigger a ban, and a manual ban was never set.

This is all of course assuming you're not a past banned member under a different name.

Claiming you've been banned when 2 of your 3 warnings have been for 0 points? There's a sub-reddit that may interest you, it's titled "Quit Your BS"

To the rest of the users: You have to try to get banned from TB. The majority of the warnings/infractions that are issued are just that, warnings. After a user has a 0 point warning or two, then subsequent infractions may earn points, and it generally* takes at least 4 rule violations of a certain type (eg someone can have 3 rule one infractions and 3 rule 10 infractions and still not be perma-banned), pretty lenient if you ask me! Unless it's a blatant case of trolling or spam posting, no one is ever banned for one offense. If I were to show you a banned user's "rap sheet", you'd all probably be surprised at how long they stayed around for. We have a simple set of rules, it's not hard to not break them. 99.9% of the users succeed in doing that every day.

*I say generally because there are extreme cases where people may be banned with less infractions, but it's not common.

Honestly, I'm not sure too many ate REALLY shocked that KBD was banned.

I found his grammar/spelling trolling annoying, but I wouldn't have expected a ban for that. I probably read less than 10% of his total output, though. So Joe's point here has some validity--I'd like to know if huffing about girls playing squires is bannable or if it was something else.

I very much agree with this. TB has a fantastic user-base. The fact that we're discussing someone who was banned and the the mods are also weighing in, and everyone is being pretty much civil - just more evidence of how top notch this place is.

Thanks for the info. I've been here quite a while and never knew (or had forgotten if I did know) anything about the point system. It's probably time for me to take another look at the rules.

We generally keep disciplinary action private, mainly because it's not anyone else's business. If you see a cop has someone pulled over, are you going to go up to them and ask why the cop initiated the motor vehicle stop? I'd say probably not, because it's none of your business and a situation doesn't concern you. Just because we're all member of this board and some people are friends, that doesn't mean you're privy to everything that happens.

I'll take your word for it but I seem to remember not being able to post for 90 days.

As far of the "trolling".......no one actually "bought" a bass, they were still waiting after more than a few years, so they could not be considered a "buyer", the transaction had yet to happen.

Not to diminish the mods job, I'd say from what I seen is that we do a pretty good job policing/regulating our own, and I believe the administrators have seen this, stayed back and watch us deal with it 'up to a point'; But I still wouldn't want the job especially dealing with people who are a real bone-head, had a 'lil too much xyz... having a bad day or who's mission in life is to make other people lives miserable. I'm glad the mods are around J.I.C. (just in case).

Please read the rules. You'll then know if huffing about "girls" playing "Squires" is an offense.
And if you still can't figure it out, you will have at least read up on what things can lead to a warning.

That seems to be the argument that a lot if people use for wanting to know the details of a particular ban. They claim to want to know what things were done so they themselves don't repeat those things. All you need to know are the rules for what not to do. There are just 10. It ain't rocket surgery.

IMHO, anyone who is commenting on the subject of getting/being banned and who has not read the rules, really has no dog in this fight.

Other than maybe using 'Suspended' instead of 'Banned' for temporary bans would help, I don't have any interest in the reasons for the ban. In most cases, including the case in point, the reasons are blindingly obvious and TB owes no additional explanation to anyone other than the member concerned. As much as that individual's 'style of engagement' with other individuals (including myself on one occasion) made me want to get involved I managed to stop myself from doing so, knowing that eventually he would tie his own noose with the mods. Res Ipsa Loquitur. YMMV.

I'd also like to say I'm glad to see how civil this thread has stayed...I've been on forums where Joe would've gotten himself a ban just for daring to make a suggestion.
The mods here really do seem more than fair.

I was also glad to see @Bob Clayton 's clarification of how the warning system works. It seems more than fair to me.
As someone who's only got one warning so far (deserved, I'll admit, but sometimes I feel taking a hit for a good cause is worth it), it's nice to have clear guidelines...and while I have read the rules I hadn't seen it explained exactly how they get implemented.

I agree you have to try to get banned here. I've seen folks do it on purpose and even brah about it, which is funny I guess? Not really.

I'm not a big TB guy anymore but I do use it, so why would I want to get removed.

Stick to the rules here even if you don't like them. It's not that hard.

How's that work?
If you're permanent-banned, then where do you brag?
If you are temp-banned and come back and brag about being banned, that's another rules violation.

But I get what you're saying.
Every now and then, you see someone who is actively looking to get the ban hammer.
Usually their main characteristic is that they contribute no useful input to the threads.
They are just straight up trouble makers.

I recall one instance of someone who got perma-banned (I think it was perma-).
He just came back from a time out and his new avatar photo was of a burning bridge.
I thought it was quite clever, but also knew he wasn't long for this world.

I imagine that's part of the business of Talkbass.
You type a thing. That thing flies off to something like an automated search engine which finds an ad that most closely matches what you typed. It knows your address and inserts the ad into the ad space on your TB page.
At the end of the month, some machine cuts a virtual check to TB, for a minute amount of money times every inserted ad. Consider how many times a day that happens across the TB membership, and CHA-CHING!
