The rules help TB maintain it's PG rating, which keeps the site on proxy whitelists and off restricted lists. As a result, I can login through my heavily restricted proxy at work, and also makes it usable through thousands of others as well. So my productivity continues to take a hit.

Joe, I've read a few of your posts/threads and you seem to be respectful and courteous toward others, and IIRC, little or no offensive language, so as far as that goes, I think you're pretty safe from being banned for those reasons.

For anything else I guess (site related for example), one has to be sure it's posted in the proper forum, since from what I read in this thread, the powers that be are pretty lenient, and yet I don't feel that I have to worry about reading offensive threads and posts here.

For those of us who are worried about being banned (me for one!), if it's something that's questionable, maybe PM a mod first? In the long run, it may make their job a little easier?

I'd be happier if there were some option for memebers to share contact info after the ban also - but whatever....

Good point.

Maybe in the future though, posters should get the contact info of the people that they like ahead of time, just in case(!), as there are others who feel the same as you do.

Doesn't make a lick of difference to me either way. I trust the Mods to do their jobs and I don't really care why someone got booted. It would be potentially useful to know if the ban is permanent or not though.

I don't trust ALL of the Mods (I have a few in mind ). Isn't there a saying about "perceived" power doing something to the individual?

There's a link to the rules at the top of every page. They're pretty self explanatory, but yes you're welcome to PM a mod first. In all honesty it takes a lot of infractions (unless it's obvious spam or something really egregious). 99% of the members never even have to worry about being banned because they obey the simple rules.

I moderate a forum but not this one. This is what I do:

All new users have their first several posts placed in a queue; a moderator must manually approve those posts before they become public. (This keeps out obvious spammers - if a first post is spam, the user is immediately banned.) After a few approved posts, users are automatically 'promoted' so that their posts appear immediately. If I'm not sure about a new user, I change their status so that a moderator must approve _all_ of their posts.

Any time a user becomes a problem, I change their status so that a moderator must approve all their posts. If I feel the need to edit or completely delete a post, I start a PM with the user and we talk about why.

I almost never ban a regular user; rather, I let them post, monitor their posts, edit or delete as I feel the need, and if they're going to go away, they do it on their own.
