I don't believe I've said or suggested that they are unfair. Merely that "read the rules" isn't an adequate explanation as some seem to believe. I don't know if KbD's grammar trolling is the real issue or if he let loose with a "shag you mothershagger" rant when I wasn't looking. I skip probably 95% of threads, after all.

Now, it's fair to say I don't need to know, because I don't. I can just keep on going and listen to any warnings I get (none yet despite probably deserving it a few times).

But don't tell me it's obvious from the rules because it isn't.

My only issue with people who don't read the rules, are that they don't read the rules.
No, merely saying read the rules is not the whole answer. But it most certainly is the first part of the process in reaching the answer.

Not having read the rules, but commenting on them or their derivatives, is nothing more than being uninformed.
I say if you want to make uniformed comments, and we all do it from time to time, that's your business. But don't go off in a snit because someone called you out for commenting on something of which you have made no effort to understand.

There are some people here who I think make it their life's work to expertly manipulate rules 1 and 10 . I think it's a new art-form. Sad to me though, because their motivation seems to be to just hurt, antagonize, and/or annoy people. I wonder how their lives would be if they just turned that around for one day and tried to be nice to people. Just one day. Eh....

To be honest, I think you have to be either an idiot, or a creep, to get unintentionally and undeservedly banned. Common sense and warnings should be enough without having to study the rules.

The problem, that I've decided to stop arguing, was the whole intent of this suggestion. The thread went way out to left field with it and made many assumptions that were completely off. My fault probably for not clearly thinking through the OP before posting.

I'm happy if the suspended and banned idea gets implemented. I'd be happier if there were some option for memebers to share contact info after the ban also - but whatever. Reasons for the ban I guess aren't necessary, but from my POV - that was never for rubber necking or arguing purposes. Just for information and to stop speculation (as often happens). I can understand people misunderstanding my intent though.

Maybe when a ban (rather than suspension) is pending, an exchange of details could be permitted (coordinated through site admin to prevent any abuses) - I can see why this might be desirable. After all, the ban is from TB, not the rest of the world, and should certainly not impact anyone but the banned.

They can't give us a comprehensive list of every possible example of what constitutes "being disrespectful," for example. So yes, that leaves some ambiguity and you're right that you never know exactly where the lines are. But I also think that the system is pretty generous in terms of how many warnings one gets before being banned: You can step over the line numerous times before that happens, which provides us with plenty of opportunity to learn where the lines are.

In response to this latest tangent, the best i can say is that mods and admins do tend to discuss almost all reports before warnings are given out unless they are unbelievably flagrant - i.e. "shag you, mothershagger" and the like. As to the wording, mods try to adhere to the spirit of the rules. Some members like to push boundaries by adhering only to the letter of the rules and then crying foul when they get warned for violating the spirit of them.

This is where the moderator discretion applies, and I din't think that will be changing any time soon. Language will always leave loopholes no matter how explicit the language gets - see our country's tax code for an example. In the public sector, people pay legal experts to find ways around the rules that can't be prosecuted under the current language, and feel very clever when they find one they can exploit even while they know that the loophole in question is completely against the spirit of the law. Fortunately for us, we are a private site and can try to make the spirit of the law reasonably clear without making the letter of it the size of a Michener novel. Beyond that, moderator discretion applies.

An organization, in its charter or Articles of Incorporation, must subscribe to Robert's Rules of Order in order for it or its membership to use it as dogma in a debate of validation of a point of discussion, etc.

Such as, "All meetings will be governed by Robert's Rules of Order version XXX-XXX, ISBN X-XXX_XXXX-XXXXX.", blah, blah, blah, etc.

Beyond that one might as well pick up a copy of the local obits or a comic book to use as a basis of argument.
