Perfect Length for stage performance cable?

With a passive bass and a hi-fi amp rig, with most cables the difference between 15' and 30' is like night and day. If you're like JimmyM and EQ out anything above 3 KHz anyway, then no you won't hear a difference. Duh! The whole tone-loss thing occurs (depending on the total capacitance of the cable) from around 3K and up.

i've used tweetered cabs and have been underwhelmed at the difference between a long cable and a short cable, too. makes me want to do a long vs short cable shootout. but i'm not going to. i'm just going to continue to believe what i believe.
 
Can anyone comment on having a buffered pedal in your chain giving you signal the umph needed to travel through long cable runs (as talked about in a certain true bypass v, "proprietary" bypass video) without any "signal degradation?

i was using a passive lakland with about 6 true bypass pedals and 20' cords going into and out of my board. i was experiencing noticeable high end loss. i noticed because at soundcheck one night i plugged directly into my head.....enormous difference. i had a high quality buffer pedal built and placed it first in my chain. there was a noticeable amount of highs back in my signal when it was engaged and my signal seemed to have more balls. i just bought a new am dlx so i no longer use the buffer. i keep it for my passive back up.

i highly recommend trying a dedicated buffer if you run a lot of cable and true bypass pedals.

Just to be sure I'm understanding the graphs correctly,...the valleys (on "Cable Test 1 and 2") are depicting hi frequency roll off?

An FWIW,...I understood throwing a buffer in a long signal path is preferred (with a passive instrument),...just wanted to get the commentary rolling on it. ;)
 
Yeah, the shape is obviously more complicated than just a rolloff, because then it swings back up again--this is due to the unique interactions between the cables and the specific pickup I was using. Other pickups might have somewhat different patterns. But overall, yes you are seeing rolloff of the highs, and you are seeing more rolloff as the total capacitance of the cable goes higher. In the graphic, total capacitance varies from one cable to the next due to their design--but when you compare a short cable with a long one of the same make & model, you will see the exact same change in amount of highs rolled off (total capacitance of a 30' cable is double that of a 15' cable of the same design).
