Pet Peaves

1. TBer gasbags who start their reply with "I've got no experience in this matter but ..." or "I've never owned one of these but ..." or "i may have heard something or read something somewhere and i'm going to give my opinion/advice anyway."
2. Guitards who plug into an amp and need a pa because they can't be heard over their amplified guitar and call it acoustic.

- I don't like the pretension that sometimes comes with amateur level players who play boutique basses
- over effected bass sounds/tones
- distorted or fuzzed bass tones for the most part. (In some genres it fits, but in many it gets in the way)
- "refrigerator" type cabinets...bigger does not necessarily mean "louder"
- I also agree with Rip Topaz about abused and especially unplayed instruments...

I agree with most of this. Amateur or Journeyman level bass player, they have no right to harass someone for owning an entry level Squire or Ibanez bass, or a Crate or Rogue bass amp. We are at different stages in life and hopefully working to a better place. Some day these young players will be able to afford what they really want if they're successful, and we should encourage them to be gracious when they've achieved success, not hide behind their insecurities by bragging about their gear.

Snob gear owners who go into rabid fits if they hear certain brand names mentioned here because the spent $15,000 on thier equipment, everyone else who owns a $5,000 system isn't worthy of the gigs they do.

People who get rude on threads. Remember to talk to people as if you were face to face. We're all reading these posts trying to share with each other.

Guitarists who play their Marshalls too bassy then tell me to turn down. Been there done that.

In the morning I'm sleeping and my mouth is open and my dog licks it! ugh! :spit:

Peace. :bassist:

2x2 headstocks is my only really major one. Especially if they have so little contouring that it looks like a brick with sticks poking out.

Example:

******* terrible. I will almost totally pass on a bass just because of a 2x2 headstock. :spit:

What are your pet peeves when it comes to basses?

I for one can't stand blue basses or white pickgaurds ugh :spit:

What are yours?

Black or sunburst bass or guitar. Absolutely detest them.

People who get this great tone on P, when I couldn't ever get that when I had them.

Here's something for everyone. There's a bonus, too. Gold hardware and an oval bridge.

Probably already mentioned by dozens, but what the hell...

1. Neck dive. Engineering failure.

2. Dead spots, unless the spot is somewhere I never go. Engineering failure.

3. String alignment off. Manufacturing failure.

4. Sharp/snagging bits. Engineering failure.

5. Split pickup relative locations that emphasize rather than compensate for the tonal differences in a BG's strings E to G. Engineering failure.

6. Flat pickups lacking any means to adjust string-to-polepiece distance to compensate for neck radius. Engineering failure.

Guess that covers everything.

And 95% of everything ever made, lol.......

3. String alignment off. Manufacturing failure.

Big +1

I always look for this when evaluating a bass that I am considering purchasing. If the top and bottom strings aren't about the same distance from the edges of the fretboard (high up on the neck near the body), then I pass because it's either a manufacturing malfunction, or, if it's a used bass, someone probably dropped it and put the neck out of alignment with the body.

Yeah, and have you ever noticed on CL those premeditated camera angles that are sometimes used to camouflage the problem?

Heh. Who's kidding who.

Bass "For Sale" ads that:

... are obviously placed by people that have no idea what they have and list almost every fact innacurately, then insist they are correct because 'so and so' told them

... are obviously placed by people to deceive, or mislead people who have no idea what they are actually buying, thinking the ad is accurrate

... are intentionally trying to rip people off

... list a bass for sale that has changed everything but the name on it as "with UPGRADES" expecting to recover the cost of their experimentation ... call it what it is and say "with MODS" and let us decide if it is an upgrade or not

... give no details of any sort, or do not even list a price

... either say in the ad, or reply when you respond, with "I dont know anything about it, I am just listing it for a friend"

Forgot one.

7. Bridges a) with poor structural integrity, b) that are hard to adjust, c) that contain inferior materials, and d) that mate poorly with their bass bodies.

Why do you HATE AMERICA?
