PETITION - Firmware Update to the Zoom B3

Signed

Here are my comments:

Most bass players use a compressor and a noise gate. This means that we have to drop one of these items to add a chorus, boost, or distortion. The only solution at this time is to copy the "Compressor, Noise Gate" and amp patch to an adjacent patch and modify the adjacent patch by dropping Noise gate and replacing it with the Desired effect.

The result is, bass players loose noise suppression and a patch just to effectively add an effect during one song.

The ability to support 5 effects would be an immediate benefit to all working bass players.

Most bass players do not use a noise gate. Only a very few bass players, stuck in the 1980's, or using high-gain distortions, use a noise gate. OK, I should not spin it so negatively--if you use a noise gate, that's fine for you, and a reasonable request for Zoom to hear.

But most bass players do not use a noise gate.

True, but I do agree with dsamudio's sentiment. A lot of bass player have 'always on' effects. For me, it's compression and eq. On the B3, that leaves me with just one slot to use. If Zoom let you use 2 effects in the background, you could then assign 3 effects to the foot switches, making it a lot more useful.

I do wonder though if the reason this hasn't happened is because some of the bass effects (synths for example) are rather processor intensive, more than the G3, and there's a chance the unit will crash if using more than 3 powerful effects at once. I believe the the MS-60b is limited in a similar way compared to the MS-50g for the same reasons.

That said, Zoom could still implement this but with a warning (In 40pt, red, bold) saying that it may not cope with certain effect combinations.

Bongo, always hating on noise hates

Have you ever tried a comp into gate Bongo?

A) My point was not to hate on gates, but to point out a false statement.
B) I have spent at least twenty hours testing different gates attached to compressors. Probably more like two or three times that much time really, but I can't be sure.

What if Zoom allowed for a "design your own" 2 effect patch for one slot?

Comp and EQ only in one slot; comp and noise gate only in one slot; would still allow 2 other effects. They already have some pairs of effects as presets.

Just thinking out loud here.

Stuck in the 80's? You should see my favorite accessory/guitar dude at Guitar Center. He is proudly stuck in the 80's and I'm pretty sure he wasn't even alive during the 80's. Wears all vintage clothing from the 80's, metal/hair band hair, plays in 80's tribute bands and even has Paul Gilbert's first Ibanez. His dream car is a Delorean. He does compromise on cell phones, but that's probably because they shut down the analog network.

I'll have to ask him if he has a noise gate. ;-)

PS - the only effects I had in the late 80's was an Ibanez PUE-5B. Looked it up and I'll be damned if it didn't have a noise gate.

I thought I read a post here where someone posted the response they received from Zoom regarding firmware upgrade for the B3? where Zoom said, no plan for new firmware that allows more slots per patch?

Edit:

Last I heard, Samson is no longer the US / North American distributor for Zoom; IIRC, Zoom is doing their own distribution again.

FWIW, I plan to get the B1Xon since I use my B3 in preset mode, not pedal board mode; and it has most of the same models except stereo effects, and supports 5 slots per preset.

Yes, I did sign the petition...hope springs eternal, and I'm an optimist. :)

There have been plenty of responses from Zoom. Basically all of them saying that they have no plans...However, they haven't explained why the B3, with the same processor and hardware functionality as the G3 series, can't receive the same sort of firmware update. The G3 has been able to have six simultaneous effects per patch for nearly two years.

Thank you! It looks like the original page I had found was outdated. [email protected] is the North American distributor, and I will forward the petition on to them when we reach 100.

You said it yourself...the B1Xon (with the same processor as the B3) supports 5 slots per preset.

This may go nowhere, but there is strength in numbers, and individual emails can go by the wayside.

Thanks for signing.

Perhaps their was no plan from Zoom's response because there was no push from customers for an update. Especially on a grand-scale like we are trying now.

Maybe if Zoom knows that its customers will never buy from them again and will throw all current effects from tall buildings then they may be persuaded to proceed with an update. :smug:
