Phasing or Flanging?

I don't have either right now, only a chorus, but since being on here I found that alot of what I thought was flange was really a phase...
like stranglehold, I read the bassist uses a phase 90 so both are very similar...

the only phase I had was on the SA bef I had, and I really didn't dig it, before that I had the DOD bass flanger and stereo electric mistress, the mistress would thin out at the height of the sweep and the DOD was noisy, so I dunno which is better honestly, I am curious about this though!!

I know it's been said already, but having both is actually really awesome. Especially when you start combining them, and even more so if you have the luxury of running them in stereo or in some sort of parallel fashion too.

Yes, they are both time based modulation effects...But they just sound different enough to where for me there's no need to justify having both.

I've been on a modulation kick lately and if you're looking for some notable suggestions check out the moogerfooger clusterflux, ehx flanger hoax, eventide modfactor, and without a doubt if it's in your budget the Strymon Mobius

I have and enjoy both. But ill put it this way. Prefer the sound of a good phaser over a good flanger anyday, but usually find more applications for a flanger then i do for a phaser. My go to phaser is the block phase 90 and i ran through several phasers. Its just sounds so good. Now u did mentioned maybe more control over a phase 90? Try maybe the newer phase 99. Something ive been debating myself actually but if it cant nail the phase 90 sound to perfection its a no go for me.

My favourite phaser was an old DOD 490 I had a few years back. Really thick and slurpy sounding. I also really like the barberpole phaser on the Line 6 M series pedals. The filters constantly move in one direction, no oscillation, it's really neat you get phase modulation without that cyclical effect.

I recently got the TC Electronic Dreamscape for the flanger section..love it! I wish I would have discovered a flanger a long time ago, as I've already used it more than I ever used any of the chorus or envelope filter pedals that I've had.

Now it looks like I'll have to try a phaser as well :)

I'm way into both phasers and flangers and often have both on my board. I usually run fuzz/overdrive into them and simply pick whether I prefer the movement of a phaser or the metallic edge of a flanger for any given musical passage. In other words, move or cut the mix (as an over-simplification).

Not at all a fan of flanging on bass. I think it's fine on guitar, but to me on bass it just sounds very...80s? 90s? Idk. But that's just for me, other use them and they sound just fine. For my money though, I'd go for the MXR '74 Phase 90. It's a beautiful, watery, and lush phaser.
