You're welcome to your opinion but we disagree. I think a lot of people take anything touches on race-baiting seriously, and they should.

I doubt Clay was trying to be mean when he joked about "the baddest white guy around." So what? It's dumb, just like all efforts to divide people based on race are dumb. People only say that kind of thing to try to show somehow that they're just so hip (which never works) or to provoke a response (which is racist).

My daughter's black. My town is pretty close to lily-white. People say and do dumb things without meaning to be mean, but it's her cross to carry whether they mean to be mean or not. I'm gonna bend over backwards, every single time, to call out potentially racist comments and behavior even if it means that I spoil a couple of not-particularly-funny jokes.

Bottom line: Racism has been the single greatest divide in American society for centuries and it still is. Making bad jokes about race is likely to backfire every single time, and no less online. Hopefully the point has been made and we don't need to go there until next time.

Sam Id rather not get into big political drama about people making a huge deal out of a little comment like that on a message board online. But just to let you know that I am not indeed racist many of my friends are black latio asian etc and to be honest any racial joking that does occur usualy stems from them.

Anyway, if he's the guy I think he his, I saw him perform during a jazz camp at Eastman in Rochester NY. He played with just a guitar player, and it was a fantastic performance.

Sorry it took so long to respond, but I've been on vaction. In reponse to Paul Walburton, I'm sorry that I did not convey my sarcasm well enough on this message board. I was merely trying to lighten up a situation that I felt was getting a little to our of hand. If you take offense to that, then I apologize. And, if you wish to engage in a more private dialouge, I will be happy to explain my point of view on these "White Boy" comments.
And as for Ed, The reason why I don't use my Velvets for longer than six months is that I break 'em. I love the garbo's, but I'll be damned if I can go for longer than 6 months without one givin' out on me. Maybe the Anima's are better, but right now I'm swearing off strings made with 2 different materials (like steel/synthetic) because I bust 'em up trying to imitate Sam Jones. I was making a playful comment about your age and lack of strength to pull them, Attempt to rouse you into a good chuckle. I don't mean to disrespect you, as I visited your website and I respect your playing. Sorry if I offended you. And as for hearing me play, check out this-a-here website.

I may not be as good as you two, but I consider myself to be a decent player, certainly enough of one to interject my opinion, and defend my contemporaries. Hope that clears the air a little bit, and if not, meh.

* I should also add that you just click on the songs to listen to them. I know, it's amatuer, but I'm just a pup.

Offended, hardly. Just trying to find out whether you were trying to state fact when you said "unless you hardly play them, they don't last longer than a few months" or were just whacking the nest to see what flew out. Your response here doesn't really clear that up. Just because YOU can't make them last more than "a few months" doesn't mean that
"they don't last longer than a few months".

I'm happy that you consider yourself to be a decent player, and interjecting your opinion (when you aren't off vactioning) is fine. You just are gonna have to accept getting grief when you publish that opinion as fact, when it disagrees with other folks experience.


Which tunes at the site have a solo? I just clicked on MISS JONES and it seemes to be just piano and drums. My speakers at the day gig are pretty bad, so it's hard to hear the bass. It might be easier with a solo out in front of the band.

Allow me to clarify. What I meant by hardly playing them is this; I consider myself to be an "agressive" player. I like to dig in, pulling the strings as hard as I can without blowing an O-ring. I have found that when I play strings made of two different materials, especially metal wound over synthetic, or a blend of organic and non-organic material, they don't last for me. It may be because of the environment where I live, the quality of my bass, or the way I play. I have decided that it is my agressive playing tendencies that lead to the destruction of Velvet/Obligato/Dominant strings. I could be wrong, but I don't like to entertain that option. If they work for you, however, grats. If I could afford to shell out 300 bucks every 6 months for a new sound, I would be right there with ya. I can't, however. Perhaps you know of a specific way that you are making yours last longer. If you have any pointers on keeping Velvets alive longer, I would love to hear them. I listened to your playing your bands website, and you seem to dig in pretty hard. I don't mean to imply that you don't. I was trying to imply that earlier, but it was jestful, and merely intended as a lighthearted joke.
As for your friends sons album, it seems to be lovely. That guy went to school with a friend of mine. He's pretty good.
I believe that I solo on the tunes Autumn Leaves, Darn That Dream and Groove Merchant. Thanks for listening, and sorry your speakers aren't that great. I feel your pain there.
I hope you can make sense out of what I've just typed. I'm not that great at communication via the internet, so my apologies.

OK. I like to get the sound I get. I've been working on getting a solid open warm swinging sound that projects since I started working with my teacher 9(?) years ago. Before that, I tried to get a big sound by playing in some really unhealthy ways. Getting a big sound isn't about playing harder it's about playing smarter. Physics, she is your friend. I don't know who you study with or how they're teaching physical approach. All I can say is that Joe saved me from incipient Carpal Tunnel. And gave me the wherewithal to play a majority of my gigs with no amplification AND no pain.

I wouldn't like to shell out $300 for strings every 6 months either. Luckily I only have to shell out $220 every 3 years or so. I gotta say, if I could get the sound I was looking for on $6 a decade, I'd much prefer that.

Sorry Nate, when it gets to the bass solo all I get is the brushes. You wanna do a swap? I can send either of the Silverbush CDs or send a copy of my copy of the Raney Trio CD or just a compilation of live stuff from the sessions and ****.

I am a man of vacation :) I wish I could say that's where I was. Sorry for taking so long to reply, but I got caught in a miscommunication between myself and Comcast as to the date they were installing my new internet services. As a result, I have been without internet for to long. Ed, I would love to do a "swap" with you. Just let me know how you wish to accomplish this, and we can get on it.
