Im researching getting a rig and want to get a carvin br600 or 1200 head, and I was looking at either a drbass or avatar cab, but then i started looking at phil jones bass. I dont really want the suitcase combo cuz its a lil pricy, but the 4b extension cab for it is cheaper than any drbass cab. I was just wondering if anyone has used the 4b extension cab apart from the suitcase combo even though its designed as an extension for the suitcase.

I've used the 4b cabinet with and without the Suitcase. IMO the 4b works fine without the Suitcase. I've seen a number of posts from bassists using the 4b with other heads. My opinion on the 4b is: 1) It has one of the best bass tones I've heard; it's very clear, quick response, and handles the B string very well. 2) Depending on your volume requirements, you might need more than one. 3) They sound best with a lot of power. If you look under the Sponsored Forums section, The Perfect Bass has a thread dedicated just to Phil Jones stuff.

I have used the 4B with a variety of other heads. Think of it as a 1x10 with a 4" voice coil. It has great midrange texture, but of course, it will have its volume limits.

  4. I use a 4b with a Little Mark II head. Nice clean tone 300 watts with 1 4B 500 with 2. Plenty of power people cannot believe the sound that comes out of it. Nice and portable also. For me it is a very revealing combo allowing the sound of the instrument you are playing to come through.

I just picked up a PJB D-200 head and was dithering about what to mate it with (I'm currently using a very old Carvin 10). My original intent was to use a 6B but it's a little pricey for me right now. I was thinking about a 4B but the reference to it as an extension cab made me a little leery. I'm glad to hear it works as a stand alone as well. I'm hoping the D-200 and 4B combo will make a killer low volume rig.

I've played through a D-200 into a 4b and a 6b (in a music store) and the D-200 is a bit short on power to do justice to the speaker cabinets. However, if you say you're in a low volume situation it might work.

  7. I'm currently using a Hevos 400T amplifier, through two Phil Jones 4B cabinets. The sound is just awsome, really tight response, great clarity and the portability of the rig is amazing.

Oh and I play in a seven piece band with horn sections etc etc

Yes, just me and a couple of acoustic guitars. About as low volume as you can get.

My other cab choice was a Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 10.5. I understand these are very efficient and may suit the D-200 better. I already have the plans so maybe I'll build it first and then go the 4B route if the Omni doesn't impress.

Thanks for the help, I still may be leaning more towards saving up for a dr bass cab. Im still not sure how suited PJB cabs are for rock or metal music, unless someone can tel me otherwise.

I'm right on the cusp of picking one of these up.

    and then likely another.
