Phil Jones Bass... really that good?

I took two BG400 and two C4’s to a square dance, with an upright and was asked to turn down a little. (against a drummer and two electric guitars.
One BG400 was the master and its effects send to the other BG400’s effects return. Each 400 had a C4 for a total of 16 speakers at 1 KW. Big room 80 by 90 feet.

Hi mborn! I’m thinking of doing something similar!
When you insert the master BG400 effects send into the other BG400 effects return, does it work so that the other BG400’s gain knob has no function in the signal chain? How about the other BG400’s tone controls?
Obviously, you don’t have to use the PJB speaker cables. They are huge and very heavy duty. I bought the connectors and made my own.
If you don’t like the PJB equipment, I suggest you try Bergantino amps and cabinets. a single or a pair of HQ310’s and a B amp sounds wonderful with upright. Another good thing about the PJB cabinets is each is pretty small and easy for an older player to load in and load out.

I (perhaps wrongly) interpreted his statement to mean that the cables gave him a bad taste in his mouth for the whole brand.
That's the taste I got without even knowing about the cables...
but that's just my personal opinion (without disparaging anyone's rig).
Funny, I think the name of this thread should be lets bash Phil Jones Bass products...mmmmmm!
I think the TB community would be better served if those who do not like PJB products should start a thread, lets say, why I like Gargantuan or Quilter, or Hosa cables etc...
I own a couple of Cab47s -- love 'em... If I need something bigger, ill drag out my big Hartke rig. -- there's probably a thread bashing Hartke too...
I'm glad to hear from those others who appreciate their PJB equipment... In our ranks can be counted Chuck Rainey, Pino, Bob Rabbit to name a few...
And no Phil does not seek endorsers... They come to him, like Marcus Miller, but he wanted his name on equipment and big $$$... Phil said no... Most of the pros buy their PJB equipment, they get a discount, but they pay for their stuff... So, if they're playing it, it must be because PJB must have some redeeming qualities!!
Also, have any of you naysayers listened to Phil talk about his thoughts on designing his equipment? I am not sure if he is a genius, but his is a brilliant, innovative man!
And from those bashers, I expect to hear from you all on your world tours!
And the customer service is second to none...
So, ill take my PJB cabs, and enjoy the neck out of them!

I think you BG 400 will have more versatility than you might think... Well made, bigger bark than its size implies... Nice clean sound, w/ good punch... I think you'll be very pleased, and have a lot of fun playing through this combo...enjoy
It will be more than enough for that purpose. I have the BG400 and the BG120.
My reference amp is the 100 watt, Ampeg combo - BA115. It had sufficient power for my small / medium sized gig needs. Seeing that the BG-120 is rated at 120 watts, it seems they would be close in terms of coverage. The difference in their speaker size - 15" and 2 x 5" respectively concerns me though. I'm going on what I read here of Phil Jones amps being the mouse that roared.

I've been a 15" guy my whole life and no one's gonna change my mind. For my jazz gigs and convenience and schlep factor, I now mostly use my BG400 and BG120. I've never tried pushing them for loud rock settings. I have other amps for loud rock gigs. The BG120 is plenty for my jazz octet with unamplified horns live drums, and amplified guitars, the BG400 never had to go above 25%.
That's awesome to know MFC. Thank you for your response. I'm leaning towards the BG-120 more so now. The schlep factor is super important to me in light of all the additional gear I haul for the sake of my back track Act.
I appreciate the modular design of PJB amps that allow expansion with tonally compatible cabinets. For now, I believe the BG-120 will suffice for my needs but one must be prepared in the event that Ring Of Fire is requested, with a full horn section!
