Another thought - I hear my basses clearer on the PJB than with any other cabinet I've tried (and I've tried many). So its forcing me to sell off a lot of basses that I can now clearly hear - and decided aren't my sound.

Off topic, but... is it the basses that are no longer your sound or just the way they sound through that amp?

It's a chicken and egg question that I'm sure has been covered before in this forum.

I tend to favour my basses and consider it the particular amp's 'fault' if I don't like the sound. I would ditch tha amp before ditching the bass.

For you it sounds you favour the PJB and need your basses to sound good through it, rather than favouring your basses and choosing amplification that suits your sound?

I stopped by Le Garage a Musique Gagné today, to give PJB another try. There was a briefcase, a suitcase, a suitcase with ext cab, a 500 amp, and a 6b. Played the first three. Still awesome sound, rich and beautiful, and so deep for such small speakers. But I must admit that the volume levels were not very impressive. The Suitcase + ext cab sounded like it could give me still a decent deal more, the suitcase alone was kind of on the limit, and the briefcase was seriously underpowered for the price tag and specs. Tone was some of the nicest I've heard from all 3, but not sure I could use them on a stage.

I have used them a few times. They move no air and can't handle a low B very well. Fart out really easy too. Go with traditional designs. This whole 5" speakers idea will pass very soon. I wouldn't bother...

I have a briefcase, and it sound fabulous to my my ears. I play fretless, and I've run my fretless J with Labella Tapewounds...sounds great, and I've run it with DR sunbeams...still sounds great...it has bottom, top, and mid, and I can eq to suit in my practice area.
One thing I do know about the piranha drivers...they are power hungry little suckers!!! When you consider that 6 piranha drivers have just marginally more cone area than a single 12, and the piranhas are rated at 100WRMS each, makes you think that these lil devils want POWER!
That's my single complaint about he PJB speakers..too power thirsty...relatively low efficiency speakers. I guess an interesting contrast is the EA whizzy which is a very efficient design.
I think it would really be interesting for somebody (TOM BOWLUS, are you listening???) to feed known input levels into a PJB suitcase extension cab (4 non-neo speakers) and measure the audio output. Then repeat using the same level input and the same amplifier with an EA whizzy 10 (cone area on the PJB 4b ext cab is about 80sq inches, the whizzy 10 comes in at about 80sq inches as well). I suspect that the whizzy would be quite dramatically louder with the same input power. I love the sound of the whizzys almost as much as the PJB.
The other cabinet I'd love to see in this comparison would be a Fitzmaurice omni 10.5 with the deltalite neo driver

I have used the Briefcase's output section to drive other cabs, and yes, it gets a lot louder. Not only are some other cabs more efficient, but you also start moving more air. I've actually thought about pulling the amp out of the Briefcase and making a case for it. But, the new BG-250 might discourage me from going to such efforts.

On the flip side, I find that at least with Phil's older, non-neo, drivers, finding the 'right' amp to drive them can also be a key factor. In general, they seem to really respond well to tube amps. I know that my 6T/9B, which can sometimes sound uninspiring with certain SS amps in the 600w+ range, absolutely kills with even 200w of tube power.

I tried my 6b last night with my Epifani UL902C driving it (with extreme caution not to put too much power into it) and it sounded *much* better than it did when I used the M-300. I thought the M-300 putting out maybe 350 watts at 6 ohms would have been sufficient for the 6b (rated at 300 watts) but (unsurprisingly I suppose) more clean power made the 6b sound a lot louder while still staying clean. So, this lends support to the claim that the Phil Jones cabinets need a lot of power to reach their potential. I've also noticed Tom B.'s comments about using a tube amp (although he's referring to the Piranhas, not the neos) so if I can get a hold of a tube amp I might try that as well.

It is also interesting to note that PJB amp gain stages are very different to other amps. Therefore setting it up requires a different approach.
On most other amps, i usually crank up the input gain till its past 12 or at 3 o'clock position and then turn up the master till about 9 o'clock.
I believe this yields the tone i want from other brand amps.

As for the PJB, i need to set it up using a high master at about 3 o'clock, and a lower input gain to taste.
If i push the input gain too high, it will actually start clipping and distort.
Its all true for the Flightcase, Suitcase and M500.
The best sound and volume is really to push up the master till it's almost max and then adjust the input gain before the clip light comes on.

Wow, i'm surprised how many people here dont dig on Phil Jones gear. Gegatso, i use basically the same setup, it's the Six-pak combo on top of the 9B and i play in a very loud progressive/post rock band and have plenty on volume.

I thought the M500, 6t, and 9b (basically the same as a six pack + 9b) was pretty loud, but I'm happier with the extra power and P-1 pre (and I didn't add any weight). If it's working for you, that's a great sounding setup.
