Phil Lesh's New Ritter Bass

Hmmm... does it sound kinda "grindy" to you? I'm not really a "dead" fan but I played briefly in a dead cover band because the bass player was really sick at the time... I always liked how Phil would dance around the chords as a kind of bass melody... very sensible to me... I ended up using a bunch of his playing as warmup exercises or fretboard-learning exercises...


Looking at those clips - it's cool to see he's using MusicPad Pro... that's an awesome sheet-music display system!

I just saw him play that bass up close at one of the inaugural balls. I'm not a dead head and this was my first time seeing him, but I really appreciated his playing. Not sure I loved the bass tone though - it seemed to have a very modern, kind of sterile tone to me. I think it's supposed to be a swan, no?

OK, this is a bit of a "Highjack" of the thread, so my apology's in advance. :hiding: I thought I would pass on this info for all the Phil Lesh fans out there.

Years ago (1989), I used to make custom tile in Santa Rosa, CA at a place called Sharon Lane Designs. This lady named Jill Lesh came into our shop and ordered a ----load of tile. We were wondering who she was and how she could afford so much tile. I drove to her place in the hills of Marin county to spec out the kitchen and shower. One of the designs she wanted was tropical fish for the shower.

We completed the job and were asked to attend their open house. Unfortunately, we were always working. I would fire kilns until 3 AM in the morning. Several months later, I was looking through a Greatful Dead book and I saw a photo of Jill holding one of her boys. I was completely surprised, and was able to connect the dots. I sure wish I had made it to the party. :bawl:

BTW, Phil did come to the shop with his two boys. I was mainly in the the shop and not the office so although I did see him, was thinking more about getting his job out than thinking about who he was.
