Philadelphia is apparently declaring bankruptcy. This will mean a substantial pay cut for the members, and a potential cut to pensions. Let us not forget that under Ormandy, this was arguably the greatest orchestra in the world. God help us all. For you kids trying to get into an orchestra..... double major in business.:bawl:

I live 30 minutes out from Philadelphia.

It's so sad. But they've got works in progress to reach wider audience, bring in new audiences and make their shows more appealing to the masses. I don't know what they means but I saw it on the news this morning.

Anything's better than no Philly Orchestra. I went on a school trip to see them play and it was one of those moments that put me on the path to being a bassist. This was actually in fourth or fifth grade, and by then we'd chosen our instruments for about a year. I really didn't intend on staying with the bass--I quit in seventh grade, actually--but the sound the bassists made sort of changed my mind at that point.

When I graduated from West Chester (Pa.) in 58, I knew I would need more work to get in the Northwestern U. graduate program so off to my favorite orchestra. I figured the principal, Roger Scott, would be busy at Curtis, etc., so I called the assis. principal Carl Torello - son of Anton of Philly bass fame. I was his only student that he had come to his house. So, before each lesson and while he finished his coffee, I got to hear all the latest bitching about Ormandy, etc. Quite an insight! The year went very well and I got accepted to Northwestern's graduate program which led to my M.M. in '64.
