Noice, I received my "Certificate 1 in Engineering" the a couple months back.


Are TAFE Mech Eng courses a more hands on type thing? I know at uni we do very little practical stuff.

We do a lot of 2D and 3D CAD, we've had a basic metal working class where we got to use a lathe and also got a class where we learned about CAM programmming and CNC machining where we got to program and use the school CNC, that was pretty interesting. The rest of the classes are theory.

Cool yeah, I did a metal machining course at TAFE this year, we made a clamp on the lathe... it was a lot of fun. I can see it being very useful for the manufacturing side of things.


At uni we do a lot of theory ie. if you heat steel and then quench it what the grains look like and their properties and even more boring things like 3D dynamics. We did a CAD subject last semester which was a blast and pretty practical too.

Material science hey? We got a couple of classes of that stuff too, interesting stuff when its not putting you to sleep. Don't you just love learning about slip planes and what steel look like at a molecular level? :D

The CAD stuff is really fun. We've got an advanced 3D class this semester and we have to model a whole object of our choice for our final test in this class. A bunch of different parts all assembled into one big object I decided to model one of my bass designs. It's cool stuff.

I have had your web build on your first two basses saved on my favorites for years!!! I go back and look at them occasionally for encouragement. Man! You have come a LONG way! Too cool.

Oh, Im very familiar with your fanned fret stuff. I drooled over your template for awhile-then figured out how to make my own. I had just never associated you with the Olive and purpleheart fretless. Then last night I stumbled on to this thread and saw the picture and went Doh! Isnt it about time you updated the web site with all the rest of your builds?

Nah, thats an old amateur site. It can stay there for the giggles but I'm working on a pro site which should show off newer builds and do the marketing thing. I never seem to get any time for it though. The site's been like two years in progress of something. :rollno:

BTW this 5 string here is not even done yet, must be like 3 years in the making now :eek: There's a few little bits and pieces I'm not happy with and can't seem to work up the urge to finish it off. I'm working on a Jazz bass right now instead of this one. :D

After more than 3 years in progress its finally done.

Specs:
Spalted curly maple top and back with matching wooden pickup covers, electronics cavity cover and headstock plate. The body has a core of Brazilian Mahogany and has layers or mahogany and ash veneer between the top and back. The neck is made of Wenge and Rock maple.

Pickups are handwound to Musicman specs, connected in series, Aguilar OBP-1 preamp, active. Knob configuration is volume, blend and stacked pot with treble/bass.

Phil,
An absolutely stunning bass!! The one and only thing that I had seen was the g string @ the headstock was a *hair* off from the rest, as far as the straight pull. But who cares about that...... It's still way more awesome than I can put out at this time :) Hell, I'm still a hack, when it comes to this one :)
