Frank how do you like your Tascam DP006? If you had your druthers would you buy another or something else? Any luck on flat or tape wound strings yet?
I Love the DP-006. It took me a bit to get levels right, but once you do, yes, it's very nice. And I found it generally easy to use. Pretty straightforward.
Regarding tapewounds, I am no longer in dialog with other parties on that.
I now have a very special string supplier for the PiccoBass - making absolutely excellent nickel rounds. We will do flats in the future, but it is far enough in the future where I wouldn't specify any timeframe. For the foreseeable future, we will do the PiccoBass with nickel rounds sized perfectly for the bass.

BTW, a buddy of mine told me that there is a 30 dollar rebate going on for the DP-006 - and it lasts just about a month.

I saw the rebate on their website which is why I asked how you liked it. At that price I can't let it slip away. The rebate form is on the Tascam website, down load it, fill it out, mail it in. Good to go.

Frank, have you given any thought to making it a string thru body using the same bridge thereby opening up a new world of available strings?

I'm not sure a string through approach would make up enough length to use other strings. Remember this is not a 30 inch short scale trying to use 34 inch scale strings. This is a 25.5 inch scale.

I just thought it might be able to use short scale 30" strings there by having to order custom made tape or flat wound strings that seem to be mythical from LaBella. Is the extra unsold bass fretted or fretless?
You're right. If I shoot for the 30 inch scale strings, maybe it is possible.

My new fretless PiccoBass arrived yesterday, well packed in an excellent hard shell case. This is one cool little bass!
The tone of the roundwounds over the humbuckers is excellent, full and clear (piano-like). I couldn't find any of the dreaded "dead spots" on the neck, and the workmanship is very, very good. I like the choice of hardware, simple, straightforward and easy to adjust. The tuners and controls feel great. I really like the neck shape, and the satin finish has an excellent feel. Overall, I'm very happy with it. Good work, Frank!
I think a lot of fretless players will like the roundwounds, but just as many will not. I think flexible nickel flats like the TI Jazz would be an excellent alternative, but tapewounds with the tonal range of LaBella whites would be my personal choice.

My Ibanez Mikro Bass 4 string weighs in at a total with strap of 5 pounds exactly. It has light weight Hipshot tuners, upgraded DMarzio pickups and controls, and LaBella white tape wounds.
