The 81 I've owned for 40 years and I'm the second owner.
1989 BMW 3 Series, the last of the hand made ones! 1985 Mercedes 300 turbo 4 door totally bulletproof mechanically. And along those German lines, the 1964 Volkswagen Beetle.
English? Triumph TR6, Austin-Healy 3000, and MG-D
American: Hudson Hornet, 1965 Chevy Impala convertible, 1955 Oldsmobile Rocket 88, 1965 Mustang GT, Cobra GT. , and of course, a CJ Jeep.
The only thing I saw in that post was 65 Impala convertible....... my buddy has one that he bought 40 years ago and he's finally going to work on it. Been sitting since 85 but it's solid.
The rest of the cars mentioned don't interest me.....
A 1955 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 (red/white) was the first car I ever actively lusted after. But couldn't raise the required $1000 at the time (late 70s).
To each their own. I owned several of the cars on this list or at least drove them. The most surprising one was the Hornet I drove. It had a very modern feel to it. A very solid stable ride. The only one I drove that I'd never want own or dive again was the Cobra GT. The only one I owned and never will own another one again was the Jeep CJ5. It killed a lot of romantic notions with regard to its off road ambitions, and it's a terrible highway ride.
Lead singer in my band has two of them. One is a rat rod-primer gray and black ,glass packs, missing chrome parts., a little rough mechanically. The other is a really nice one. Took a road trip in from Pittsburgh to Erie and back last summer. Turned a lot of heads. Nice highyway cruiser.
Drummer I've worked with on & off over the last 40 years is a huge fan of the GM B body cars ..... Impala etc ....
Anyway, a handful of years ago he and I were cruising the 'hood when we came up on a guy with a 67 Biscayne. Under the hood was a 427 and it was mated to a 4 speed manual transmission....... who doesn't love a B Body with a fat iron and a handshaker??
So a deal was struck and Mark (drummer) bought the car for $3500.
Come to find out it still had the numbers matching engine, transmission and rear end. The car was built in Canada and one of 201 Biscayne's that was a Big Block/4 speed combo. And then we found out that this particular car was originally painted a plum purple color (1967 only) and was likely one of three cars built in 67 with that paint, engine and transmission combination.
Last I knew the car is still sitting in Mark's garage, probably worth stupid money by now.
This past weekend we were visiting the kids up in St Paul- they live sorta across the street from the State Fair grounds- this past weekend was the "Back to the Fifties" show at the State Fair grounds- apparently some 10,000 cars- the cutoff is 1964. There were just all kinds of amazing cars all over St Paul- people had lawn chairs set up on Snelling just to watch cars. It was quite the site.
