Any time I see one of these, I expect a head of state to step out of it. It just looks like that kind of car.

Haven't seen this one mentioned yet.
I'm no expert but that car seemed underrated. Wouldn't it have been way better than owning a bug?
I was driving an 81 Volvo 242 at the time, but I had a guitarist with a light blue 2002 and a singer with a flat black Bavaria
My friend who had the Opel GT, had, at least, a couple of these, if not more, back in the '80s. Various 1600/2002 models; he'd cannibalize one to make another one work.
The BMW 2 series was popular, but Opel and Ford were seen more often.
I guess the fact that those were available with 4 doors had something to do with that.
The BMW 1800/2000 was a bit rarer. The 2000 CA/CS appeared a bit more popular where I grew up.
BMW were also considered the road rage type of driver car in the first half of the seventies, the 2002 Turbo might have contributed to that image.
Those taillights were pretty typical. The later E21 series was more popular. Especially the 320 injection (320i/323i) types.
I remember an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1995, "Alfa Romeo; La Bellezza Necessaria" with stunning cars.

It reminds me of a Bugatti 57S atalante that was in the news, a decade ago.

1963 Studebaker Avanti, fastest street car in the world in 1963, in all categories. Only car in the Louvre in Paris as a work of modern art (American car but designer was French). Still very overlooked, a realistic "bucket list" dream car, wildly undervalued ( you can get a great one for less than 30k). I think they are gorgeous.
Still used as a symbol of the high-speed future- all the cars in Gattica, the Uma Thurman sci-fi movie about genetic super-people, are Avantis. And Professor Neutronium, the eccnetric scientist father of the Powerpuff Girls in the Cartoon Network cartoon, drives one.
Already got the matching girlfriend, my bass player who bears an uncanny resemblance to Uma Thurman. So, gotta work on getting me my dream car, too!
