I looked at a mockup of a black anodized guard on my black P. Doesn't work for me... boring. Gold, mint, and red tort all look better on black.

Yeah, black on black could be too much black. However, a 3-ply black pickguard with white middle ply may make all the difference with that white pinstripe.

Go off the grid with something....

Do you want to go for a more classic look or a clean look or are you open to something more creative and expressive?

Well, yes and no. I'm happy with the bass as it is, with the stock 3-ply mint guard on olympic white. It's understated and overall appropriate. My other option would be a 3-ply black guard that pops more against the white body and makes the bass look more rock 'n' roll. Not sure about other options, I would even consider a pink guard, at least for a while, but where do you get one? Tort is not my cup of tea although it admittedly looks classy.

Your instincts are good. Cream, aged white, parchment, mint - all of those off white things, when you put them under stage lights, will end up washed out, and look pretty similar, or (under certain lighting conditions) it'l look like you wanted the colors to match, but didn't achieve that. Almost the same color isn't a good approach when it comes to variable lighting.

Put a black guard on there, you will have contrast, and it'll look much better, especially under stage lights. If in doubt, ask a lighting person - they'll tell you.
