I've chronicled the steps of my process here, but the easy answer is "kinda-sorta". Basically, I burnish the dye into the guard while removing the excess, but if you rub it really hard a teensy bit will come off. Since I try not to sweat on my gear, I can't say if it would come off, but it's a fair bet some might bleed off.
To combat this, I laid down a layer of Brush-On Krazy Glue onto the red one and that sealed it up nicely. Later, I tried it on a blue one. For the blue Sharpie dye, it locks in the primary color, but unfortunately it kills the "scarab effect", so in that case it's a bit of a trade-off.
