OP here, still working my way through the thread, as I got slammed shortly after posting it a few days ago.
The volume response way exceeded my expectation, as I thought I might get nine responses -- certainly not 9 pages.
In any case, thanks to all for the great suggestions and great photos.
Man, that makes me wish I had gone with transparent black on the natural mahogany Peavey Patriot I just refinished! It has a body kinda in between a P & a J, with a more P-shaped pickguard (see pic)
My kit came with a white pickguard. Once I assembled it I kinda disliked it:
Since I had gone with the carbon grey to "weather" the look I have ordered and am waiting on a black /grey pearl.

Think the Black /Grey in the guard will go nicely with the rest of the body
