PICKS FOR BASS!!!!

I use all kinds of picks. Different materials and thicknesses produce different attacks and tones. In my gig gear box I keep a bag full of them. Depending on what kind of music I'm playing I will put 6 or 8 different kinds on my mic stand pick holder.

The best thing about picks is that they're CHEAP. Go get a handful of the things for about three bucks. Try them all.

I was using the Fender 346 Shell Guitar Pick Heavy occasionally ... I don't use a pick that often. I never really gelled with it, but it seemed like the appropriate one to use.

I was goofing around the other day, and dug up some old guitar picks I had when cleaning out some stuff. Now, I think I have found the one I really like: Dunlop Stubby 3.0mm. I would actually play a gig with these or do a song if it required it.

I don't use a pick often, but when I do it's for aggressive rock. Dunlop Big Stubby Nylon 3.0mm

1mm is the sweet spot for me. A little lighter or heavier I can still use effectively, but it's the Dunlop with the little Rhino on them in 1mm that feels perfecto.

I like Dunlop Ultex Triangle 88s for picking. I stack 10 at a time in a vise and drill a 1/4" hole through them for grip when it's hot. The similar Fender Heavy rounded triangles are almost as good, the Ultex just wears less, but it's not a thing I'd worry over.

I love thin picks for bass. .60 or .73 does it for me.
It feels good and the floppiness of the pick creates a pleasent "bloom" in the note...like a subtle kind of compression.

A lot of people recommending the .73 nylons. I used to use those ages ago, but one of the kids at Guitar Center accidentally gave me the .88 nylons instead and I got so used to them that now I can't go back.

Additionally, if you like the dunlop nylon picks, try out the "max grip" ones. It was the same situation. I got max grip nylons, and now the regular versions feel so bad to me.

When I first started playing bass, a friend gifted me a set of Gator Grip 1.5mm and I never looked back. I've tried thinner picks but the way I play, I feel like they "slide" on the strings instead of playing through them. These are thick enough to not bend but at the same time they don't feel like you're holding a rock in your hand. They also sit in between my fingers great and have great grip even when they're a little worn down. I also like that they're green for whatever reason lol

Why?Thick Inflexible Picks.That's the way.
Top left to bottom right:3mm Big Stubby,Dunlop Primetone 5mm,Timbetones agate 4.7mm picks.

They work for me! But try some thinner, thicker, bigger, etc... Different stiffness/thickness does change the sound a bit.

I use banjo thumpicks.
- can't drop them
- can switch between fingerstyle/picks easily, even mid song
- No one steals them
