Double Bass Pickup for effects?

i want to run my upright though effects. are there certain pickups that are better for this than the realist?

For time effects and light modulations such as reverb, chorus, delay a Realist will do fine provided you use a preamp to match impedance.

Now if you want to get into crazier stuff like filters, fuzz or distortion, flangers or octavers, magnetic pickups will give much better results. The old Schaller horseshoe is awesome for effects. Not exactly the most visually discret pickup though.

if I got the schaller would it be pointless to keep the realist on there as well? if I had both pickups is there a preamp that can blend the two signals and is small enough to be on the bass itself?
