This is your image, EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD HAS ONE.. Including you.

If you liked the look of something that made you happy and you wore things that made you happy, and you bought a red car cause you like red, then THIS IS YOUR IMAGE.

Believe it or not you do have a IMAGE, and if someone wants to wear there sisters pants, or someone wants long hair an tie dyes, or wear makeup, or a pink boa then that is there image.

Image has and always will be a part of human life, go back 900 years, 9000 years what ever there has always been a image someone else has copied, or wanted to be like. Its life

Evolve or turn into a grumpy old man with the "its about the music" and "back in my day" storys.

Dont turn into a person who puts others down for what they like, its not a good IMAGE.

We were talking about image in the context of a rock n roll band, not your persona(personal image you portray to the world at large)! We are off topic a bit so I will try hard to not continue, as the rabbit trails being put up are........I'll just leave it at that.

your contradicting yourself.

if I choose to wear black leather pants, no shirt and a pink boa everyday and some old man comes in to my show who doesnt know me from adam, your going to say this guy is all about image and not rock and roll.. When in fact that may be my everyday attire.

Your judging books by there covers, and in the mean time, not listening to the music cause of there looks.

OK, here's the deal so we can stop all this silly arguing. Image is EVERYTHING in music. You may think it's not, but it is. It doesn't mean that you have to look a certain way or have a certain color scheme, but it means you have to have a look that people can connect with on an honest level. Whether it's wearing jeans and a t-shirt playing a sunburst Precision or wearing a tiger stripe jacket with a Charvel painted in pink or wearing a yellow Devo suit and playing a Steinberger, image is everything. Ever notice the classiest jazz bands all wear suits or tuxes? There's a reason for that. That's the image they're projecting. Other bands present a sweaty no-frills image. It works for them. But it's an image. Don't fear having an image. Embrace it. Musicians at every single style of music out there have to create an image or you won't remember them. Be yourself, but have an image.

Sorry, but I have always said that had MTV been in full swing in the 60's, Janice Joplin would have never gotten a gig! In the 60's you could of had three eyes and a horn comin out of your forehead, but if you could rip some guitar licks like there was no tomorrow, Bill Graham would book you. It's all hollywood now baby.

A quote by Lou Adler - "When I am first told of a new group, I don't want to see them, I want to hear them without any interference or distractions". He said this in an interview about the Mamas and the Papas back in the day, and was referring to "image".

I only came back to this thread to pass this on to the folks who understand.

I will ignore those who deserve it.



My take is 75 per cent should be talent. The other 25% is image and marketing. Nothing to overlook, but certainly not the holy grail. You can swap those numbers but it won't last.

Well, this thread got needlessly ugly. I take sort of a middle way Personally, I wouldn't wear anything on stage that I'd be embarrassed to walk down the street in. No spandex, leather pants, eye shadow, etc.

Having said that, I've definitely liked a few bands that sported what could be called very calculated looks. (Early) Devo is a prime example. Image becomes a problem only when it becomes such a focus that a band thinks it can skate by in terms of songwriting or live performance. In Devo's case, I thought their first two records were great, and I can attest that they put on a great, rockin' live show back in the early '80s.

Wow...For a minute there I got an image of a dog chassing it's tail..(it didn't get anywere):D

Anyway for Pimping a Black P-Bass...I'd go for a tort gaurd and some Ashtray Covers. I wouldn't do the relic thing. They just never look right to me.

I agree, except for one thing. If the board is rosewood, I'd go with your tort suggestion. If it's maple, gold anodized, IMO.
