Well yes - but he was attacked before that for his vernacular in the original post. Perhaps he should have named the post "In Praise of Pino" or something. Then there wouldn't have been something for the detractors to latch on to.

As the "attacker" you're referring to I admit I could have steered clear of the thread altogether - and probably should have (although I am a big fan of Pino's). Oh well - I still believe that there's plenty that Pino can't play and that in no way detracts from the monster musician he is. No one can get around to covering everything in sufficient depth and that's okay - it's part of what makes individual players special.

I bet he can play those things. I've seen him slapping on a fretless Stingray in the 80's. I bet if he sat down for an afternoon, he could play any of those styles.

Yep. There's a difference between not being able to play something and choosing not to go in that direction.

hate to burst some bubbles but most professional bassists can play any style and any genre well. Because you dont see them doing it in a youtube video doesnt mean it isnt in their wheelhouse. If there is a niche and they can make a great living at that style, that is how they brand themselves. Tony grey posted a killer slap video on his fb page couple weeks ago and people were in awe as if he didnt start from the ground up slapping and plucking like most players.

I would say that any very good musician has the tools to learn any number of musical styles but there are just too many styles out there for anyone to be able to cover them all in sufficient depth. Fake one's way through something in a way that will fool a casual listener? Sure. But to really know what's going on? That's something else entirely. Have you seen Nathan East's instructional video on reggae?
