PJ Appreciation Thread!

Always wanted more snap out of my P. A PJ gives me that. Not quite as well as a MM, but the MM lacks the round richness of a P. I've had this MiJ Fender since buying it new in the 80s.

I had that exact bass. Nicest fretless neck I’ve ever played. If the headstock wasn’t black, I’d have kept the neck. Gave it to a kid down the street for less than I paid for it, he loves it

Is it an active or passive bass? Judging from the controls, it looks passive, but for some reason, I always assumed Yamaha basses were active.

Some are, some aren't. Yamaha's current lineup includes the newest generation of BBs (like that lovely orange one @garp showed); of the 4 tiers, only one is active. Yamaha also makes the TRBX basses, most of those are active except I believe the TRBX174. If I'm not mistaken they all have the same 3 band preamp and a passive/active switch.

It really is a nice neck. Very well-crafted. Maybe a little slim for my taste, but I'm not all that picky. I know lots of players prefer that. And the fingerboard is among the best I've played.

I've never owned one...until this just arrived an hour ago. This is a budget Yamaha, but with a good setup, who knows.

The Midnight Lady has everything I want in a PJ Bass 21 frets, neck through, Seymour Duncan Vintage P, Seymour Duncan Jazz Stack V, passive wiring with a 3 way switch with volume and tone for each pickup, all black hardware. She is a bit on the hefty side but I don't mind 'cuz the tones are sweet and the action is perfection.

Green one is an American Elite with Nordstrand NP4A/NJ4SE pickups, Nordy Active/passive 2 band pre and Badass III bridge

Blue one is an American Performer with an American Professional neck, Nordstrand NP4A/ NJ4SE pickups, full passive and a Badass II bridge

For me these 2 basses pull off the tone I've been searching for a fair amount less money than previous basses I have owned.

I'm kind of surprised that, despite being a very common pup configuration, a lot of people here and on other bassist circles seem to heavily dislike PJ Basses? So I thought it would be a good idea to have an all round positive thread about all things PJ!

What's your favorite PJ? What drew you to them? Or simply post a picture of your bass for us to see, I don't know. As long as it has a split coil near the neck and a single coil near the bridge, anything goes

(I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct forum, please help me move it to the appropriate one if that's the case)

Well I just played 2 hours with my MIA N series Fender PBj running through my Eden gear rehearsing for a gig this weekend. I've had this bass for 18 years now. I've performed live with it more than 500 times (way more if I include worship services), at least 100 recording session and 5 LPs. Zero complaints.

I can honestly say this, while there may be some bassists that turn up their nose at a PJ, I have never had a negative comment from sound engineers, sound men, band mates and or producers about the way my bass sounds. In fact the comments are quite positive, especially if they've been working with other bassists. The main comment I get is it sounds like a bass should sound like, and it plays well in the sand box. This is a good thing when most of the gigs I play in are larger ensembles.

Make no mistake, I can get it stick out like a sore thumb stuck square in your face alright if that's what you are looking for, but my gigs typically don't call for that.
