PJ bass recommendations?

Huh. I've got a 97 California Precision Special with the maple fret board and it punches way above it's weight in terms of playability and fullness of tone up and down the neck and across the strings. The only complaint I've had is the volume pot crapped out after about 10 years.
Well, that's just my own personal real world experience with the one I had.

I don’t doubt it, I know you speak from honest experience and a discerning ear. I just wonder if I got lucky or you got unlucky.
I'd say the former.I tried various things to try and mitigate that thin G string;

Replaced the tuning keys (Hipshot Ultralites)
Replaced bridge (BA II)
Replaced P pickup (SD Vintage P)
Replaced J pickup (Classic Stack Jazz)

The G string was still rather thin and weak sounding, so I attribute that to either (or both) the neck and/or the body.

My #2 bass is the American Performer, which I love! Very reasonable weight, fast neck (though not Jazz thin) and the Yosemites are very underrated pups. They provide a strong output and very good lows, in my opinion.

I am thinking of adding a PJ by the end of the year. I tried out a Lakland Skyline PJ at a local shop and it was really nice. Liked it a lot. I also tried out a Duff PJ and it was really nice as well. They both seemed great. I would probably give a slight edge to the Lakland.

With that said, I really loved the neck on my Ultra Jazz bass when I had it. I am seriously thinking about getting an Ultra P body and an Ultra J neck and marrying them up. Does anyone know if the neck with swap out with no problem? I would really like to put an Ultra Jazz neck on a standard PJ body like the Performer, but I don't think they would marry up.

Hey all. I’m in the hunt for a four string PJ bass. Preferably passive. I have two Fender Am Pro IIs, a Precision and a Jazz. I love the matte neck finishes and the feel of both basses. Each has their place in my arsenal.

I recently played a Spector Euro 4 LX that is beautiful but of course active electronics and I’m not sure I wanna go that route. Love the bass though.

Then I saw this photo online and LOVE the look of this bass. What is your go to production PJ? Not opposed to custom just probably out of my price range

A PJ really needs an active circuit to sound good in my opinion. That’s why the Spector is so legendary. You basically played the very best PJ. Anything else will not be as good.

What scares you about an active bass?

Well, if you have the budget, I have one of Rob's basses that Bruce Nelson custom builds out of Southern CA. This thing is a dream to play, and looks pretty slick, too. :)
