PJ bass yes or no?

Like my PJ. I favor the P pickup and dial in enough of the J that it gets a distinct different tone than my P or J Basses. I like it for a change every now and then. It sounds great live on the couple of harder rocking songs we play that I use a pick on.
Agreed, on all counts!
@Kitkit; My first-ever bass was a P/J, a Fender Aerodyne to be specific. It sounds great and looks even cooler. If you ever get a chance to sample one, give it a try and see how it feels in your hands. Who knows? Maybe someday you'll have one of your own.
In honesty, the P/J pickuped bass gives the better of the Fender basses (though I don't know what the front pickup of the Jazz sounds like).
Here's an example of a great P/J sound…to be specific, the bassist was rockin' a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders.

Landed on this bass bc it had most of everything I was looking for-Active EMGs, reasonable mid-range price, Jazz Style neck, and optional J pickup if I need it…
I’m thinking about getting a straight up P-bass now bc I almost solely use the P pickup, but it’s been a GREAT instrument so far…
Don’t think you can go wrong with a PJ, but I’m still kind of a newbie, so I will let others weigh in on how it sounds in a band setting…

I didn't read the whole thread either. But this is what I did to my pj bass.
2 EMG X pickups the BTS EQ circuit, and a output booster from EMG that is the only hooked up to the J pickup.
All of it wired for 18 volt.
When I play normal finger style base and slap I blend in a bit of the J pickup and when I want to go for the Jaco jazz soloing thing I'll blend in a little bit of the P. I never set the blend into the center. The p and the J together equally just don't sound good to me. Especially when slapping.

I'd probably rather have a P/J than a straight P. I like the extra dimension that comes with the J pickup on my passive custom P/J.
Don't expect "the best of both worlds" in terms of both P and J tones. I find that the J partially blended in with the P can mildly smooth over the tone compared with the solo'ed P pickup. Very handy if a bass has a grumpy P pickup that's too aggressive sounding for more mellow tunes.
My favorite inexpensive P/J would probably be a Yamaha RBX-170. Nice right out of the box, but I've heard a couple of these that were hot-rodded with new pickups and high-mass bridges. Tremendous step up in each case. No experience to report with that Washburn.
