Always had Jazz bases in past, and wondered why I couldn't quite dial-in "my sound".

Turns-out the P pup was the missing ingredient.

I tend to treat them like P-basses with the J pickup being something I roll in or out for flavor

Totally!!
I don’t treat mine like a P necessarily but i do treat the j pickup like another “tone” pot.
Its a good way to roll in and out a little extra bite.

I am considering buying a washburn t14 PJ bass. Anyone have any advice on Pj bases .

My 2001 Am Hot Rodded P sounds great, and I put a set of EMG GZR-PJs in a 32" Warmoth G4. I like the hum canceling and the pickups also sound great and variable to my ears. For example, I like the J dimed with the tone fully muffled out. Growly Motown...

I guess I am a fan too. I read all kinds of stuff about wimpy/noisy Js that were only tone-sucking appendices. But I seem to have dodged all that.

I learned on a fretless ESP PJ bass. I think I turned the J pickup on once. I never liked it. I run the P pickup all by itself. I still have this bass; I still don't use the J pickup. It's all about what sound you are going for.

I'll take one if it's a P-bass with a J pickup added like Tony Franklin...(meaning a P-neck, P-pup in P position, blade switch, etc)

I think with both pickups on they have their own cool sound. It’s more mid forward and a bit more aggressive compared to a jazz. I have not played the newer fender PJ’s though, mostly Yamaha BB’s. Anyway it’s nothing to be afraid of. I have both P, JJ and PJ basses and they all sound great!

I have an older (1990) Washburn Mercury PJ that I still adore.
Go for it.

It's a tool and a pretty versatile one. You can get a proper P sound with P soloed, a burpy rear pup J sound with J soloed and a P with some definition when blended. I personally find myself using them for the P soled. Why buy a P/J then, you might ask? Well, more choices in active 5 string P/J's.

Oh I forgot about the Tony Franklin. If I was in the market for a fret less , that would be the one I would get. Another awesome PJ.

I have two PJs, both Yamaha:

1) BB2000 ('82) &
2) BB3000 ('84)

They sound so good, they'll make your knees buckle.

I put new Thomastic jazz flats on the BB2000 yesterday, tuned it up, plugged in the envelope filter and played along with a couple of Prince's funk outings. The bass sounded so @#$% good, I began to feel dizzy, so I took two aspirins and had a lie down...

Seriously if you're on a bit of a budget and want a good PJ, skip the Washburn and get a BB: an entry level 200 series, or a 400 series. You cannot go wrong with these.
