PJ Basses

I’d have to say vintage. I’ve questioned whether I should go the pj route and just get a vintage p. I have a Jazz and a few Jazz like basses too so I can get the J sound from a j or j like bass…

IMO I’d go something that has passive vintagey style pups with an active pre that can be bypassed.

Not sure what is out there that fits the bill specifically but someone will chime in!

was that stock, what year, and what did it sound like? These are pretty rare I would think?
Yes, all original. It’s a 1983 Fender Precision Elite II. I believe they were only made for a few years. You can toggle between pickups or blend them to taste, or dial out the bridge pickup for a traditional P tone. It’s a pretty cool bass, I bought it new from a local music store and played it for years as my main player.

Good God, if that Ampeg speaker fell over on you it could be bad ...Humongo.

This is one I own and installed. It gives a Passive bass Active sound with the ability to just go passive as it was. They have ones more expensive and they dont really seem to bring anything more

Audere Audio Pro JZ3 Preamps

Installed in a Geddy Lee 2004. No latency what soever.

So far the finest PJ I have played was a MusicMan

One of these badboys: MM Caprice.

During the whole COVID thing, I made my own version (cause I could not find one to purchase at a reasonable price and I was bored) with the standard VVT controls. If I had to do it again, I would go with VTT and do the pickups in series

Never seen that MM. What period were those made?

I think the production was short. Not sure when they came out but they went out of production around 2018. You can find them used, but they command a new Stingray price.

Personally, I really want one, but I can't give that much for a bass right now.

Joe Dart demoing the Caprice with some Jaco licks:

The video was 6 years ago, so, maybe introduced in 2016? They also did a P called Cutlass.

I’m a big fan of the ESP-LTD AP-5. Between that and my Aerodyne, I’m flush for PJ’s.
If I were in the market for another PJ though, this would probably be it. The ergo’s of the five string are really comfortable and the hardware/electronics are what a lot of people upgrade to, anyway.

Nice, I'd hit that....a four or a fiver.

I’ve got a few basses in my Arsenal but the one thing that’s missing is; wait for it, wait for it…. A P Bass!

So… I don’t really want a modern P so if I get anything it will be a PJ. I’m not a big fan of production brands but I could be swayed, the closest I have to a production instrument is a KSD ProtoJ. Looking forward to your suggestions.
You're obviously going to get every recommendation in the book, but what about a Fender Precision Special?

I’ve owned a guild pilot in the 80s, 2 Pedulla mvp 4s, two with EMGs one with barts, and loved them all. I loved one of the pedullas so much I’m building a PJ with Cliff Bordwell with the same barts to add to my 30” collection I’m building up.
