PJ Club

Any thoughts on these I thought this club would be full of them but there's only a few why is that? Asking because a second hand one has popped up around me and I'd love to be part of the club

I know. I guess it's the front to back width I like? It doesn't feel like most jazz necks I've played.

So I don't get too far off topic, I'll make this quick…have you ever tried the neck on a Classic '70s Jazz (rosewood, bound & blocked)? It, too, is a bit chunky front-to-back, as well as having a curvier vintage fretboard radius. To that effect, some label it "baseball-bat-like".

I have. I bought one at Sam Ash that was crazy cheap. I asked why and the guy behind the counter said "uhh....it's like......got scratches and stuff". Turned out the truss was maxed out and maybe broken, I can't remember. But it felt good.

Ha. Not gonna happen. Despite being filthy and smelling awful and having been beat to hell, it's a keeper. Guitar center is stupid. These never last on the used site and they coulda sold it for twice as much. Even in this condition.
Jup! Those Jazz Bass Specials are really special. I love how it combines the best of both P and J worlds. I was short on cash and had to let one get away from me (they are NOT common here in Norway), and I regret it now.

I love the pickup blendability. It's more dynamic than any other two pickup Fender I've played. Before I had one I never understood the point of two volume controls AND a switch, but for whatever reason, when the switch is in the middle, fiddling with the volume controls get's more clear variation and blend than any other PJ or jazz. Fantastic.

I did a P solo switch mod on my Squier SS Jaguar PJ, and totally understand why such a switch is beneficial. When soloing the pickup it got hotter and more dynamic. I imagine very close to how a pure P would sound. And with the flick of the switch right back to PJ versatile goodness! :-)

I'm now modding my AVHR to add a pup selector switch and reduce overall mass.

The switch is NKK #M2024SS1G01 (SP3T on-on-on). Front/rear positions isolate the P/J pups, middle position brings in both. The original VVT schematic is rewired with 500K volume pots and Sprague 0.047uF tone capacitor.

Gotoh RES-O-LITE tuners save almost 1/4 pound on the neck, and (believe it or not) the BadAss II bridge is actually lighter than the Fender High Mass bridge that came on the AVHR from the factory.

So far, it looks like complete finished weight will be near 8.0 lbs. Original weight was 8.6 lbs.

The Japanese jazz bass specials have a tbx tone control, right? This is from musiciansfriend:

The Fender TBX Tone Control will also work in place of any standard tone control on any guitar with passive pickups. Some American Standard Strats are equipped with this tone control to cut either treble or bass instead of the standard style that attenuates treble only. When the control is set at the centered detent, it is off. Turning the control one way cuts treble; the other way cuts bass. The TBX can be also be wired as a master treble/bass control.

Is that what it does? So when it's all up it's cutting bass all the way and boosting treble all the way? And vice versa?

No, the TBX is not capable of boosting. Turning one way cuts the highs and the other way cuts the lows.

the first is a '98 squire p bass special standard series I rescued from a pawn shop on the cheap ($110) the neck is fast and comfortable with the usual jazz dimensions and the pups are hot, the electronics are super responsive. this one quickly became my main
the second is a 2014 squire affinity, fret ends are rough but overall sounds acceptable.

The MIJ jazz bass specials with a standard black bent steel bridge with the back of the neck not painted, what's the deal with those? Are they any different aside from the bridge and unpainted neck back?
