PJ Club

I think this is the one...fits most of the CIJ or MIJ models with Gotoh tuners.

I am not sure all the specials used this model though. Also, the correct hardware should be black chrome which you cannot match. If you really want it to match, you can take it off and send it to Hipshot and they'll mount your tuner to a Xtender plate...however the plate and post they install will be regular chrome but at least the key will match.

EDIT: Maybe I am thinking of the Aerodyne with the black chrome, I went back and looked at your pics and your hardware looks black-black not black-chrome...in that case: Amazon.com: Hipshot BT10 Bass Extender Key for Japanese Fenders Black: Musical Instruments

They can do this for any tuner that is similar to any of their standard models.I have had them customize two tuners for me...cost was around $75 if I recall...plus shipping. Here is a photo of a Grover they converted for me a couple years ago. This is a model they used to offer, but only in chrome.

Yah the tuners are black, but I don't mind a chrome tuner. The bass has two mismatched knobs, one that's not there, and a pickup switch that doesn't have the little rubber thingy. It's.....eclectic. I think the chrome tuner would work.

I guess any xtender can fit, right? It would just be a matter of drilling holes?

Yah they do! $59 ain't bad either.

These are kinda fiddly to set up right? You have to sorta calibrate it's movement?
First...double check that your bass uses this style gotoh tuner. I am thinking maybe some used tuners with the oversized back plates more like the BT-2...but beware, the BT-2 may not have the same post size.

As far as setup, it's easy as pie. You only have to adjust the dropped position, they are usually in the ballpark out of the box, then you just tune the string with the adjustment screw to the desired pitch.

Well, if you do go chrome, I'd change the D string tuner as well and alternate colors!

As far any fitting, no, plate sizes and post sizes are different.
And as far as setting/tuning them, it's easy, 5 or 10 minutes, then it's set and forget.
I've got one I haven't had to adjust in 20 years.
Yep, as long as you are using the same strings consistently and your setup and string installations are also consistent, there is very little adjustment needed after the initial install.

Yeah I might be exaggerating when I say never.
It's basically a set screw, after strung changes it might need a tiny turn here and there. No biggie.
I just switched from Sunbeams to TI Jazz flats on my PJ with the tuner I posted above...pretty big difference in the strings right? But the drop D was easily close enough for rock & roll!

I use it often. Especially on "train-wreck" endings of songs in D where I play the whole song in standard tuning but drop it at the last minute for added drama at the end! There's a few cover tunes I play out of drop-D the whole song that aren't so on the original recording, just because I can. We don't play any songs that were actually recorded in drop-D... I don't think.

@marko138 gets #135!
Anyone else wanting a number just say the word!

In my reign as admin there will be but two rules to comply with in order to become a member:

  1. You must post a picture of your bass with a PJ pickup configuration, any body style as long as it has a split p and a single coil.
  2. You must ask for a number in the post (no need to send me a private message). If you post a pic but don't ask for a number, I'll assume you don't want one.
All members are members for life unless they ask to be removed.

That is a beauty! The owner of the finest PJ in all the land ought to have a number in the PJ Club! I got one for ya...
I think I posted it here before, but in case anyone missed it. I built that sucker from an MIJ Fender Duff McKagan body. EMG GZR pups, Gotoh bridge, Hipshot Ultra Lites, the finest Squier Affinity neck ever, and Rotosound Swingbass 66 strings. It plays and sounds incredible.

You did indeed on Page 19, that was 5 pages before I got behind the wheel. I am not in the habit of giving out numbers unless asked, but such a bold proclamation (finest in the land) warrants automatic induction.

I thought I'd share a couple unique pieces with the group. I jabe owned PJ's in many vareties from Spector to a Reggie Hamilton but there have been favorites.

This was the first iteration of a converted Lakland DJ5 to a PJDJ. Did this one myself:

This recently acquired beauty however, was done by the Lakland folks themselves. It now also sports an East DJ Retro pre:
