PJ Club

It looks like the J is in the '60s jazz position. I think the J placement can vary between the '60s and '70s position. I know for a fact that it did on the old MIA hot-rod precisions. There were two versions, one with the J spaced @1-3/8" from the P and the other with the J spaced @1-3/4" from the P.

Just found this on the GC used site for $250. I bought it without speaking to anyone. I'll call when they open and see what the deal is. Based on the picture it looks like it's missing one knob and the other two are unoriginal and the switch is missing it's cap, but if that's all that's wrong with it, $250 still seems low. We'll see.

Very nice! It's like metallic absinthe!! drool

I've seen similar ones floating around GC's used database from time to time, and in a number of different colors. This one really stands out to me as it's one of my girlfriend's favorite colors.

Hmm... I just noticed that. This was one of the most impulsive bass buys I've ever done. I opened used.guitarcenter.com when I got to work just like I always do and saw this. If I love it, then that jazz neck is gonna have to go and it'll get my maple board American Standard p neck, assuming it fits.

If it's a Jazz-spec'd neck, I call first-dibs if you're gonna sell it…doubly-so if it's sporting the curvier, 7.25"-vintage radius many Japanese-made carry!

Here's the one I play. Got another (Black Squier with black headstock and mirror pickguard) that is sadly collecting dust. Okay well bittersweet maybe.

Ooh! Post a pic or two of it! I have a personal fondness for the Standard Series P-Bass Specials, especially the black & chrome, pewter and ProTone models. :snaphappy:

Lovely bass @.BumeStik. ! You got #132.

How are Seymour Duncan PJ pickups? Generally well regarded? More modern sounding or more old school?
I think tone is totally dependent on which of the Duncan pups you choose. My PJ has the SPB1 (classic 57 P sound) and STK-J1B (vintage Jazz bride sound without the noise). The SPB1 is hotter than the STK-J1B so I keep the P pup set low. I've used this setup with flats for about 12 years and love the vintage vibe. But, if I were to do another PJ build I might try the Hot Stack STK-J2B for better balance with the P raised.
Maybe someone using SPB3 quarter pounders could chime in about the tone of the hot Duncans. I'm certain their tone is different from the vintage tone I was after.

I don't know which they are, or if they're SD at all. The bass just got delivered to my job but I won't open it till I get home. In the picture it looks like they say Seymour Duncan, but I'll know for sure later.

Basslines and a Gotoh bridge. I wasn't inpressed at first. But after a neck shim, raising the pickups, and Sunbeams in my preferred super duper light gauges (30-85), it's a beast. I even like the neck. Jazz width at the nut but it's nice and chunky front to back. The electronics are nice and quiet. Even the solo'd bridge isn't weak or noisy. Are these single coil?

The only issue is the thing stinks. It stinks real bad. The previous owner must've been a heavy smoker.

Nice bass. I know a local player who used to own a fretless model that looked very similar (his had a little green tint to the body color). Stock it played and sounded very good. Looks like yours may have an aftermarket bridge.

If the bridge pup is a Duncan bassline and totally quiet when soloed, it's one of the stacked humbucker models. Sorry but I don't know if they are marked so you can identify which one it is. Guess you could pull the pup and look for some number, count the number of wires or put an ohm meter on it, then check the Duncan web site for details.

As a nonsmoker I understand the "smell" issue. Recently when playing in smoking clubs I've had good luck removing the smoke odor from basses using "Mr. Clean antibacterial spray citrus light with febreze". Spray a little on a clean soft rag and wipe down the everything but the metal parts and strings/fretboard. Then using a different clean cloth apply your favorite guitar polish to body and back of neck (I like lemon pledge... yeah yeah let the flame wars begin, but I've used lemon pledge on finished basses since the late 60's with no issues, it also helps protect from the smoke smell). For smokey cases/gig bags, I used to let them stand open in the garage (or back yard in the sunshine) for a several days, now I spay them lightly with Febreze and let them sit open in the garage over night. Hope this helps and enjoy the new bass.

Thanks. I'm a former smoker (a year and a half tobacco free after 15 years of sucking down that poison), but even when I smoked, cigarette stink grossed me out. I never smoked indoors and never in my house or around my basses. The bass is filthy in addition to stinking, so it needs a good cleaning anyway.
