PJ Club

Hi there. I have a typical single coil problem with the J pickup on some of my PJ basses. They pick up noise. I love the sounds I can get from a PJ, but are there noiseless pickups that works, or are there other ways? I assume shielding is one way to go, but arent. most basses shielded with shielding paint anyway?

How do you guys combat your noise problems?

I just deal with it because I like the sound of single coils. You could get a hum canceling J.

I put a Dimarzio ultrajazz in my PJ and single coil noise went away completely. Great pickup. Nice and growly.

That'll make single coil hum go away, but not noise picked up from the room. You'll need shielding for that.

Welcome to the club!

@Shardik - #130 & @gunlak - #131

Anyone else wanting a number just say the word!

In my reign as admin there will be but two rules to comply with in order to become a member:

  1. You must post a picture of your bass with a PJ pickup configuration, any body style as long as it has a split p and a single coil.
  2. You must ask for a number in the post (no need to send me a private message). If you post a pic but don't ask for a number, I'll assume you don't want one.
All members are members for life unless they ask to be removed.

Oh... and BTW. I think I qualify for this club. May I have a number?

Here is my bass family (the three middle ones should do, I think):

That Ibanez Roadstar is awesome! What year is it?

I've become a fan of the Fender Super 55's. It's a split-coil pickup built into a Jazz pickup size and "voiced" to sound like a single-coil. Personally, I find them to be a little "beefier", which I like. However, I haven't yet had a chance to put them in a straight-up Jazz configuration. (That's for my next build-projekt, probably with an ON/BOTH-ON/ON, three-way switch!)

One nice/not-so-nice side-note; Fender doesn't seem to make them any more. They've gone all-in with their "Noiseless" and "N3" pickups. But you can find them, singly and in a neck/bridge pair, all over the internet, not to mention TalkBass, for a reasonable price. (e.g.: I got a set from @bassdude51 for less than $80)

How is it? I ordered mine yesterday. Blizzard Pearl with Maple neck. Any suggestions on strings? I mostly play simple rock with a pick. (FooFighters,Coheed,TakingBackSunday)
I love it honestly, the neck feels fantastic, actions good and the fit and finish is awesome. The only thing I don't like is the bridge so I have a new one on the way. Pickups are very quiet but sound good, I keep the blend knob in the middle and it gives off a very nice fat sound with some growl. I put a set of dr hi beams on it and absolutely fell in love with the sound, not sure if you're a dr guy but I love their strings and can't wait to put a set of lo riders on it. You'll love the bass

After a string change and a setup, I'm impressed. It's a very good bass. No sharp frets and I didn't have to shim the neck like I normally do to get the stupidly low action I like.

The only weakness aside from the weight is the j pup. It's noisy and anemic sounding. I've come to expect that from cheap PJs. The p pup is great.

Just found this on the GC used site for $250. I bought it without speaking to anyone. I'll call when they open and see what the deal is. Based on the picture it looks like it's missing one knob and the other two are unoriginal and the switch is missing it's cap, but if that's all that's wrong with it, $250 still seems low. We'll see.
