MIA Hot Rodded P-bass with MIJ Classic Series '70s neck.

full.jpg

This one was heavy — about 9.5 lbs with the original neck. The MIJ neck saved about 1/4 pound, even with hefty MIA '75 reissue tuners.

It's amazing how low you can get the action with the vintage-style frets.
Nice. Are those hotrods just regular PJs? Or are the pickups or wiring something special?

Just found this on the GC used site for $250. I bought it without speaking to anyone. I'll call when they open and see what the deal is. Based on the picture it looks like it's missing one knob and the other two are unoriginal and the switch is missing it's cap, but if that's all that's wrong with it, $250 still seems low. We'll see.

I dig the black and pewter specials...

Looks to have Seymour Duncans in it...I don't think those were ever OEM spec for these. I don't think that really detracts from the value though...the original pickups were good but not spectacular.

Hmm... I just noticed that. This was one of the most impulsive bass buys I've ever done. I opened used.guitarcenter.com when I got to work just like I always do and saw this. If I love it, then that jazz neck is gonna have to go and it'll get my maple board American Standard p neck, assuming it fits.

How are Seymour Duncan PJ pickups? Generally well regarded? More modern sounding or more old school?

It was a good idea to jump on it...GC's return policy and all. I might have pulled the trigger too at that price.

I'd say the Duncans are a little hotter and punchier than the stock Jazz Special pickups. These are a pretty common upgrade for this model. I think that Fender was going for the Duncan Quarter Pounder vibe with the originals, at least they copied the oversized pole pieces.

Bought the unfinished body on E-Bay and had a guy who painted my goalie helmets through the years (see avatar) give it a vintage stain and a clear coat. I tried various pickup combinations and settled on an older set of EMGs. A Warmoth neck completes a project that came in at about $500 ($200 for the stain/clear coat). Strung with DR (hi Beams?) 40-100. It's a 'Swiss Army Knife' bass that works well in lot's of situations.

The only thing that I would do with this is put a V-shaped head stock neck on it... Warmoth used to sell them but now you have to get the blank paddle and shape it yourself. A V-shape neck would give an 'Alembic-esque' look...

Here is what the body looked like from the E-Bay ad.

Nice! I like it just fine with the Fender headstock.

I have not found official Fender specs for the MIA Hot Rodded P-bass. From the info I've seen so far, they were produced from 1999-2001, mostly using contemporary MIA Standard components.

Dub-E is correct about the wiring, just basic VVT pots. It does use a mini pot for tone control, to fit in the jack hole on a standard pickguard.

I don't know anything about the original pups on this bass, and I haven't pulled these pups yet, to see if they are OEM or aftermarket. However, whatever they are, I can say that this bass has a really sweet tone — perhaps a little more soft and round than the original ('63/'64 AV reissue) pups in my AVHR — growly but smooth.

My reverse PJ, I wanted to do something different so I put the J pickup in the neck position. Please don't make fun of it. The previous owner thought he did a great "Relic job" on it right before I bought it, which is why it looks fine in my avi.
