Thanks. It is a heavily modified EKO BX-7 from about 1982 and my main player since about 1988. The only original hardware is the bridge and nut. Here's a pic of the sharp end, still sporting 20-yr-old Superwounds...
I dig just about everything Pat Wilkins does, he is a master of his trade. There is some merit to this approach but I like my J pickup to provide some typical bridge J bark so I'm happy with mine in the 60's position. Perhaps most production PJ's have the J in the 70's position as well. Given the chance though, I would play the heck out of a Pat Wilkins PJ!
It does. When EKO was in its heyday back in the 60's the wood stock was already seasoned for up to 20 years. The wood used on these was left over from that time so potentially now it is 70 years old. Ignoring the pine wings, it is really high quality maple and mahogany and you can feel every note through the body. My main bass prior to this was an early Wal ProBass (1e), so it says something that this one took the main spot over that!
The German-made OBL (Bill Laurence) pickup went in in 1988, the SJB-3 went in this year, and I've recently replaced all of the pots and caps, gone from VTT to VVT with 500K volumes, added a switchable greasebucket option (not in the above pic), push/pull phase switch and 3-position tone cap selector, so the tonal possibilities are endless. Nice collection Guli, fellow lefty here and sold my G&L SB-2 I posted here about 5 pages ago. I couldn't get along with the tone and maple board.

I swapped out Model J from the DiMarzio DP126 set for an Ultra Jazz (DP148).
To my ear, the Ultra J seems to give a little more pronounced bark/bite (burp?), and richer blend with the Model P.

I dig P/J's. That extra element makes for some great options.
