My favourite pickup combination:
The wonderfully named Charvel JP
...although the purists might argue that the P is the wrong way around, so here's an Ibanez Roadstar RS924 to placate them
...but, then again, there is much to be said for the reverse P as this Warwick SS1 demonstrates
...but, if you're still torn, go with JPJ like King Billy here

PJ configuration (and of course standard Jazz config) just sound "right" to me for fingerstyle. I bounce back between them. Here's my PJ, a lowly ESP FB204 LTD (lower lever Frank Bello sig bass) that I modded by upgrading the hardware to chrome (high mass new-old stock washburn bridge) and dropped in EMG PJx pickups found on the higher end Frank Bello model and put some cheesy, trapezoidal MOP self adhesive inlays on the neck. The EMB PJx pickups sound incredible and are very passive sounding. Recorded this bass through a compression pedal into a GK 1001RBII for our upcoming 12 song LP and it was easily eq-able, sounded great and cut through the mix very, very well. The neck is chunky (the deepest bass neck I've ever played) BUT is very comfortable and had me re-thinking my love of jazz necks. Stock these FB204s are pretty good with great build quality, the only thing I didn't like was the tone of the stock pickups/preamp.

Finally got the matching aged white pearloid PG for the P/J installed, and took a couple of pics of the "twins". If I hang around TB too much longer it could turn into "triplets", as I'm GASing for a passive P - Black/Maple MIA to sport an aged white pearloid PG....

I forgot to mention that I looked over the active electronics when I had the PG off, and any passive/active via push/pull pot mod is not happening. Volume pot is mounted on the circuit board....
