Agreed, though. Basses conisdered 'Special' are not for irreversible modding! I have some that will never get touched because they are perfect!

It's a Jake P/J from German / Polish builder, Maruszczyk.
Incredible value for money, built to my exact spec: Hipshot bridge & tuners, Haussel pickups, chambered body (7.2lbs!) and all for pretty much what you'd pay for a new MIM Fender in the UK.

I concur. If you really, really want to try this out, I would suggest you grab a relatively-inexpensive bass to use as a test-bed. Perhaps a used Squier Classic Vibe, if you want to be working with something that's good to begin with. Then you could see if the additional pickup truly makes it shine.
This is starting to remind me of a project that's lying dormant in the back of my mind. All I'd need is an excellent CV-J, a CV-P pickup and a Reggie Hamilton-sig pickguard for a routing template. The idea was to create the closest thing you could get to a Squier Classic Vibe Hot Rod P/J, complete with the P-pup in/near the classic "sweet spot".
(I read somewhere on the forum a post by Reggie, saying how they worked overtime to find just the right spot.)
I've added a J pickup to 3 different basses over the years, most recently an AVRI 57 P bass. I had a professional route it for me.
I wouldn't hesitate, I wouldn't worry about using a cheap instrument and I never noticed any change to the acoustic sound of the instrument.
The trickiest thing is to figure out the pot configuration. A bunch of threads out there including the most recent one. If you are staying passive I think the best option is to use a 3 way switch.

Thanks for replies, I won't do it to this one - it has nice overtones and is overly brilliant sounding amplified and unamplified. I have other basses that sound dull and thuddy plugged in and not plugged in.
Ok.. here are my four P/J basses.. Number Please?
2012 Yamaha BB2025x, the flagship of the BB line. Got it three weeks ago and I think it may be the best bass I have ever owned. Haven't been a huge P/J fan, but the tonality and responsiveness of this passive P/J set is unreal. Gives back exactly what your hands put in. Got me thinking I need to add a J to my fretless 1980 Fender P.
