PJ Club

I thought some might be interested in a flying PJ. From the Facebook site of the band Every Time I Die:

Yes please! Number me :)

Alright @Deleted member 269102 you number is #134 welcome to the club!

Anyone else wanting a number just say the word!

In my reign as admin there will be but two rules to comply with in order to become a member:

  1. You must post a picture of your bass with a PJ pickup configuration, any body style as long as it has a split p and a single coil.
  2. You must ask for a number in the post (no need to send me a private message). If you post a pic but don't ask for a number, I'll assume you don't want one.
All members are members for life unless they ask to be removed.

What did I just buy?

Found it on the GC used site for cheap.

Used Parts Pj Walnut Electric Bass Guitar

Looks like an MIJ power jazz bass special neck and some kind of body. Odd PJ spacing. And the P pickup looks wider than normal. Pretty cool lookin though, right?

Oooh, Monday morning impulse buys.

Nice one! Curios about that P pickup.

Well, it's a reversed Split-Coil P-pickup. Could that be what's making it look "off"?

Question, Mon Capitaine; Is that Power Jazz Special neck a J-width nut or P-width? At a glance, it looks like a P-neck.

I'll find out on Wednesday probably. It's coming from Indiana to New York. It does look like a P though. If the body does what it's supposed to do, a fretted neck will be in order. I've come to accept my complete and hopeless inability to play fretless. I didn't realize when I bought it at 6 this morning that it was defretted.

Check out this wackiness that someone posted for me in the jazz bass special thread:

It would be shame to waste all that goodness with my horrific fretless intonation skills.

You're right! I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. But if it's been de-fretted, couldn't it also be re-fretted?

And as far as your "Pretty cool lookin', right?" question, I gotta be honest with you. Cool lookin'? Certainly. But I can't help but feel it's a little…I dunno, incongruous, perhaps? I mean, you've got a great looking mahogany body…no doubt there. And I've always dug the carbon-fiber-pattern to the PJ-Special headstocks. But you've got one piece that's very "classic" looking and another that's quite "modern" in it's groove. It's like those old Reeses Peanut Butter Cup ads, but instead of "Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together", to me, it feels like "Two Great Tastes That Don't Quite Blend Together". But who knows? It's just one photo. I could just as easily change my mind if I saw it in person.

Interesting indeed! I've seen that pic before and you're right, it would be a waste. That's a whole lotta tonal control going on there. But now that it looks like the body and neck are an original pair, it makes me wonder if someone tried stripping the body or if the "mahogany look" was done at the factory level.
