You really need to take each instrument on its own merits.
It is, In fact I have lusted over Ricks for years. I should have titled it Playing a Rick saved me money.

Your thread title is a bit misleading, if you had titled the thread "Love the Bass... Disappointed in Q.C." you would have a more sympathetic crowd.

Sounds like the classic "binding bleed" problem, seems unique to Mapleglos for some reason. I think it has something to do with the glue or finish migrating into the binding? Sigh.... Every brand has its dogs, seen Rics that are perfect, and ones with sloppy QC like this one. That's why I'd never buy one sight unseen unless through POTR if Wildwood. Photos perchance? Otherwise people will say it ain't so. If it's a legit and photo documented QC problem, I don't know why that would offend Ric owners, it is what it is.
It's just sad that an oppinion about an inamimate object offends people. It's not like I said something racist or bashed a religion or something. I simply stated that something as obvious as bad binding making it out of the factory is ridiculous for a high end American made insturment.Congrats. You've offended a mass population of Rick users
They arent for everyone. They are not the most ergonomic basses out there for sure and that puts off alot of people. For me, it didnt bother me at all. I played a weird shaped and heavy bass for 22 years (a Guild B301) so it wasnt that big a transition. Ive only had used Rics and my current fireglo is pretty much perfect as far as QC. But there are haters for every type of bass.
You should have just asked for a discount. Then you'd have a great playing, great sounding bass for less cash.
I agree that RIC needs to up its QC. But swearing off an entire brand of basses that you admit can be awesome just because some have cosmetic QC problems seems like an overreaction.

First of all, the statement that Squier (NOT SQUIRE) makes a flawless guitar for under $200 is so ridiculous, I'm not even going to address it. Second, it's always a good idea to do your homework before you buy a bass. Rickenbacker QC issues are well documented. People whine about them almost every day.
You prefer a Squier over Rickenbacker. You should buy a Squier and play it. The fact that Squier players feel the need to prove to everyone on TB that they prefer Squier over other brands makes me question that they really do.

OP, sorry, re-read your post. You said the white plastic binding itself is discolored? That's probably just a sloppy binding scrape job prior to clearcoat. The "binding bleed" i was thinking of is actually staining of the maple body itself, presumably from some reaction with the binding glue, it looks like this:
I haven't seen this on any newer basses, I think it shows up only on the old ones. This one is probably early 70's with that checker binding and crushed pearl inlays. I'd still want this bass!

It's something you hear about a lot around Ricks and modern Gibsons. My Thunderbird has some quality issues, but I got it in a sweet offer so it's a little more bearable. I don't think I'd pay the full price (£1249 on GAK, bloody hell!) for one though.
Find one at a price point where it's easier to stomach, if you can. Ebay and Reverb are your friends.

I think Squier players are just happy to not have to spend over a thousand dollars on a well made, very playable bass for the first time in many years. I know I am. : )
