So, my performance experience is primarily in jazz bass, with a decent amount of orchestral experience.
A violinist friend of mine is having me play on her recital. For a sonata she’s doing by Francois Francoeur she’ll have a trio. I’ll be playing the continuo part on my double bass (she’s hoping to find a harpsichordist but will settle for piano if she has to).
I was wondering if any bassists had tips on playing with a group like this and in this style. I know some general stuff, like having a higher bow hold (I play French), a light touch, and being especially communicative with the other musicians, but I’d like some guidance for stylistic aspects. Planning bowings (i.e. if/when to put slurs, bow directions) my rhythmic approach, tone, that sort of thing. Any tips would be appreciated!
