I’m in the market for a new bass bow and I’ve come across a few older models that are supposedly better with gut strings. I’m mostly a jazz player looking to use the bow for practice, however I was wondering what makes one bow better for gut strings than another. I am only interested in German...
Here are two more video demos. Just recorded on an Iphone. One is showing it in 5ths tuning, as well as demonstrating how well this type of instrument (IMO) blends way better with amplified instruments than a violin family instrument typically would (mostly due to frets, i think)
other demo is...
So, my performance experience is primarily in jazz bass, with a decent amount of orchestral experience.
A violinist friend of mine is having me play on her recital. For a sonata she’s doing by Francois Francoeur she’ll have a trio. I’ll be playing the continuo part on my double bass (she’s...
David Herman baroque style double bass bow (French). I had this bow made for me 2018; it has a pernambuco stick, katalox frog, and a imitation ivory button. It’s a great playing bow but I simply don’t play it enough to warrant keeping it around.
Asking for $900 obo. Shipping is not included...

Have any of you guys tried the Marcello/Vivaldi cello sonatas at pitch? Marcello's 6th sonata lays really well that way and some of the others look like they probably would too, but it's still tricky enough in thumb position to be a fun challenge without sucking up months and months of practice...
I don't play double bass, but am a fan of early music. I stumbled across this compilation of early bass music - I mean music that features the Bass viol or Violone as a solo voice, from the Baroque period. It includes pieces by baroque composers like Giovanni Batista Vitali, Giuseppe Colombi...
Chinese made baroque bow @118 gr; 76mm
I bought it this summer to try with gut strings. Not for me. It's a decent shop bow with good hair. Six weeks old.
Thanks
Louis

Paging all historians out there..Is there a difference between the two? Or was the violone the "grandfather" of today's double bass? I am also interested to hear about the "frets"?, refer image below, and why they existed in the first place and why they got replaced, eventually.

Due to degenerative disc issues, I am transitioning some of my double bass time to the bass guitar.
Playing the bass guitar, I can sit back in my good ol' armless rocking chair...something that I cannot do playing the double bass.
I am strongly interested in continuing to play baroque music on...
Hi all,
Of course I know guts are also used for slapping, old school jazz etc. But for classical music it is always just said that guts are "suitable for baroque music". Why is this? I mean, before 1900 or so all strings were gut and so ALL classical music was originally played on gut. Why is...
Baroque double bass, Germany circa 1840. Recently set up, appraised and valued. This is a very good sounding bass in good condition for its age. It has acquired a couple of cracks to the back panel at some point in its long life, but these have been repaired (see photographs) and do not affect...

I am a fan of baroque music and an avid double bassist.
I currently have a matched set of Thomastik BelCantos on my ~60+ year old Czech double bass and use a baroque double bass bow.
The sound I get is quite nice...and is definitely a step toward a true baroque sound.
I have a set...
Hello, for several auditions coming up for me, I am required to perform a composition written in the Baroque period. While practicing the classic Bach suites, I realized that I have limited knowledge about any sort of Baroque music for the DB. Does anyone have any music suggestions for me...
