If the sight of the crowd is starting to get to you during the show...close your eyes for a bit while you play, look down at the fretboard, or pick a spot on the ceiling to stare at and let yourself loosen up a bit. If you mess up, no big deal! "Play your face" and just keep going, chances are the crowd won't notice if you don't stop.

Best advice I can give is "have fun" the audience wants to have fun so create the vibe. About the gear...sometimes I rock a $50 bass with a small cheap amp or a boogie stack with an expensive custom bass and I still sound like me. It's always good enough. Best of luck!!

For the record, I saw Pat Metheny the other night. Amongst his on stage collection of guitars was a Squier VI. Considering he has all of his acoustic guitars made to order, this is a pretty big endorsement for being on stage with a budget instrument.
And don't tell anybody, but I use a Squier P Bass on stage in some cases. (It feels and sounds every bit as good as my Fender Am Pro. Shh!)
Man, your first gig? The excitement, the anxiety, the joy--nothing like your first gig. As many others have said: enjoy it, and don't take yourself too seriously. I look back on my first gig and wonder why I was so nervous, but that's just part of the process for most people.

Shake it off, stay positive. Try to relax - stretch, hydrate, have fun and let the gig unfold with confidence. We’ll all expect a gig report!
Seeing the audience naked to avert stage fright with mirth has been a suggestion for 90 years. These days the distraction from playing music that that could cause I would recommend some other visualization.

I played a gig with a friend's Squier Jazz last year. I was shocked to find out that it sounded better than my Fender RI '62 Jazz. Well, not as surprised as I could have been: a few years prior I did a tour with a Squier J and it worked out fine.
Except for the dweebie bass players in the crowd. I never judge, but am always curious about what the other guys are playing.
Marking this thread for review a couple of months from now. It won't be my first gig, but the first in nigh on 50 years. And I appreciate all the positivity that has been displayed here. A refreshing change these days.
