definitely posting "Weight?" with no intention of buying. This whole weight thing started with Les Paul players I believe. Now, folks here believe it's mandatory to add the weight to a "for sale" classified, or the Ad is somehow incomplete.

i always ask the weight of any bass because i have physical limitations and the weight makes a difference. since i've bought over 20 basses in the last ten years (not sure how many over 20 because i've lost track), i think it's safe to say i often intend to buy - but not if a bass is over my limit, which is why i ask.

I’ve never cared about nut width on a 4 string bass... but when I buy an acoustic guitar, I definitely want to know the nut width AND string spacing at the saddle.

Also, not trying to be a dick, but selling instruments is a job. Sometimes a job sucks and takes work. Sometimes you have to cater to potential clients/customers or you might run off the one that would’ve bought your product.

I have no issues if somebody has struck up a PM and wants to ask the weight of a bass. My response was more about the thought that an Ad is incomplete due to the weight not being posted, and therefore folks need to put the obligatory "weight?" on a posting that is lacking it.

"I know you said no trades, but" gets my vote. "Nice price, good luck" and "wow, gorgeous" don't bother me as a seller, people deliberately ignoring the terms of the sale do.

I also worry about some of y'all's marriages with how mad your spouses get at you purchasing gear but maybe I'm just luckier than I think I am.

Unlike the nut width, fingerboard radius and various other things that can mostly be found online for factory made instruments, weight is always pretty unique to the specific bass in question, and as such, greatly varies.

Posting weight means having more relevant info for your bass in particular, and I will always ask for weight before I even think of purchasing a bass. The last MIM jazz I bought weighted about 4.2kg which wasn't too heavy nor light but it was alright for that type of an instrument. If I asked "weight?" and he replied "it's a bit over 5kg" I'd just not be interested in the instrument whatsoever. Also I am talking about local classifieds in Serbia, obviously I will never trade around here because I'm far away from anyone selling anything here.

I'll confess, I'm a "interested in any trades" guy, but sometimes people are and they don't specify.

Also, the worst that people can say is "no, thanks." No one should be offended by this, but some are.
I think the “gripe” was that the seller had already specified no trades.

Unrelated to Krfoss’ post that I quoted, I’d also like to point out that while I still maintain that the seller has a job to do if they really want to sell their instrument, the buyer could always get on Google and look up the specs themself… Other than the weight of an instrument obviously.

“What’s the lowest you will take for it?”

Seriously. Make an offer or don’t but this tactic is basically insulting.
Lord, I hate this question, which I seem to get now routinely. Anybody stupid enough to negotiate against themselves without a legitimate offer first should be banned from this site.
