We played a wedding last summer. Grass, no stage and a downpour right after we got set up. Threw a tarp over our stuff, got soaked. Played the gig and sounded awesome. Made for a memorable gig. The gigs where everything is great from stage to mix - while awesome, often don’t seem as memorable as the ones where something didn’t go at all as planned. No stage No problem. Just dont have me get there early waiting for dinner crowd to leave.
Grass, sand... problem.
If we arent provided certain reasonable things we certainly wont take the gig. Especially a wedding where there is plenty of time to formulate solutions and probably funds to handle it. Including a solid foundation and a plan for rain(tent), and a contract that insures we are compensated in situations we do take a risk and it turned bad. Weve done dozens of formal and informal weddings and usually isnt an issue with those. Its the budget partys where we have to watch out more closely and make sure our equipment will not get trashed since we are bringing PA, lights, backline etc. Tarping and un tarping although memorable does suckWe played a wedding last summer. Do not try and extend the stage, that's impossible. You are the stage.
This is... perhaps.... the best thread I’ve ever seen for identifying judgmental weenies.
I will GUARANTEE:
1). Somebody with talent that will make you curl up in the corner and cry has played MANY gigs on stages. Likely many more than you.
2) Nobody is anywhere close to as big of a deal as they think they are when it comes to judging the personalities, experiences and preferences of other members of Talkbass.
I’ve played gigs on stages, at ground level, etc. I’ve not been doing this as long as many have, and I’m FAR from the cream of the crop - but is has never, ever, occurred to me that I might be so privileged as to judge a fellow musician's life. The very idea makes me sick to my stomach. Anybody who thinks they are too good to allow room for other opinions about certain subjects? Get over yourself.
I'm out.
Just play it's good to be on the same level some time,sPrefer elevated stages but will do the floor if required.
Do not try and extend the stage, that's impossible.
Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no stage.
Then you will see it is not the stage that extends, it is only yourself.
